My child has expressed an interest in doing this . Going away on a boat. Learning rya etc. there seem to be a lot of companies that run this activities for 13-18 year olds. Just wondering which are the better companies

If you have a Sea Cadet unit near you it would be worth them joining. It's quite a commitment (2 evenings a week) but there are loads of optional off shore trips and qualifications, including RYA ones. Very reasonably priced and bursaries available for lower income families.

Our now adult DSs went on many sailing holidays and gained RYA qualifications both in sailing and windsurfing. They started at around 8 years old.
One got his instructor qualification at 16, the other sailed at University and they both had summer holidays working at a sailing school.
We even bought a two man Enterprise boat and they joined a sailing club. It was a fantastic hobby for them and taught many life skills.
As long as your child is a good swimmer and enjoys a taster session, go for it.

No they started at a sailing school on a loch during the holidays. The club they sailed with was on a reservoir.

I went on a RYA course in Salcombe aged 12/13. Cheap then but v expensive now probably. Age range 12-18. We slept in two barges in the Salcombe estuary and had to learn to row to get breakfast. It was brilliant but probably lacked a bit of supervision.
