I had a really good day out recently in Folkestone.
I wasn't expecting much but it surpassed my lowly expectations by miles and was really enjoyable. Loved the harbour arm and spitting all the quirky art.

Any surprises others have come across?

The Tissington well dressing, it was just a really nice day in a pretty village. Lovely coffee shop and food ice cream. Was really well organised, so didn't feel crowded.

I really enjoyed Norwich too @PopcorningLikeAHappyGuineaPig
We based ourselves there for a long weekend in Norfolk a couple of years back . I was surprised how much I liked it as no expectations whatsoever .

I also thought that Carlisle seemed a nice place - only visited briefly with an overnight stay on the way to Scotland but thought it may be worth a further visit . Thinking about it - we are planning a trip on the Settle-Carlisle railway when we visit Yorkshire Dales later in the summer so that will be our chance .

Oh, you will love Settle-Carlisle route. You're in for a treat!

I know this is differnent to what you're asking but the other weekend I took the boys to a local park. It was threatening to rain all day, so the rule was we'd head home once it starts raining. We ened up being there for 6 hours, and the boys would have stayed longer.

We popped to a shop and got some sandwiches and drinks but otherwise we didn't spend any money

When we got home my partner asked how we managed to spend 6 hours there and I could't really answer! We walked around a bit, fed the ducks, went to the play park, had a look around the football pitches etc - it was a really nice day 😂

Hastings ! Lovely shops in the old town, nice restaurants, fish and chips on the beach and ice cream

Oh yes, another vote for Norwich! We have had a few visits in the last three years, as DD1 is at university there. Definitely worth a day trip.

Just had a lovely day out in Cleethorpes. Rode on the train, had fish and chips and spent a few hours in the arcades. The boating lake is pretty and the lollypop road train fun.

I love it there in all seasons.

Bristol Docks...train from South Wales.
We had a lovely wander, lunch in a nice little pub and a boat trip.

We visited Norwich for one day many years ago, and bought a house a few weeks later here. We moved from Stroud which is similar in some ways, but Norwich was more our scene.

Day trip to the Isle of Wight was great and doable if you're reasonably near Portsmouth/Yarmouth. Used Tesco vouchers to cover the ferry, body boarding at Shanklin, fish and chips on the beach, drink at Yarmouth as the sun was going down and home on an evening ferry. One day, but we felt we'd been away much longer. Really relaxing day.

Battle. The abbey was fab, the beach gorgeous and there was a castle nearby.

Battle doesn't have a beach, hehehe! Do you mean Hastings? There's a castle there and a beach.

Enjoyed a nice sunny afternoon in Whitehaven last September and was also pleasantly surprised by Broadstairs, especially the beaches, a few years ago.

Harebrain · 24/05/2023 19:49

Cirencester. It was bustling on a sunny Sunday, with lots of quirky little shops and lovely places to eat. The Abbey was lovely too.

Lichfield. Loved the Cathedral Quarter. Picked entirely at random en route to the National Arboretum.

Inverness. Massive second book shop. Boating lake. Playparks. Walks by the river and the botanical gardens.

A day on the Isle of Wight is a wondrous thing. Hovercraft can be reasonable and it take 10 minutes. We walk the coast from Ryde but the buses are great.

We do it quite regularly and I always feel refreshed and relaxed.

Lymington is also a wonderful town and we did a walk to Hurst castle from there along the coast. Hurst castle itself is an amazing day out, there is nowhere quite like it with its amazing views of the Isle of Wight and the mile long beach walk to get to it.

Kirkcaldy- walked along the coastal path to Dysart and explored Ravenscraig park. Beautiful scenery, helped by it being a sunny day.

True though Battle is only 5 miles inland from Hastings and St Leonards.
