Multi fuel or wood burning ones

Looking at a 5kw, will use every day...in colder weather, north england

I've no idea really and not sure which to get. Company we have had round said go for a wood stove, they reckon £90 a ton for wood and saod they pay about £300 a year for their wood

We are v happy with our Woodwarm stove. Multi Fuel. 6kw is v efficient and we use nothing else to heat our 3 bed all the winter here in Scotland. I use mainly wood.

Wow, that sounds good!
So does that sort of price sound about right for the wood?
And why would you go for multi of you mainly use wood?

We have the Arctic 5 wood burner. It’s officially wood only but our installer said you could occasionally use some smokeless ovals as there is a grate. We are burning force/kiln dried wood only at the moment until our own wood dries sufficiently (luckily OH works in forestry so wood generally free). It was installed in February so not had it a winter yet, but it heats the house nicely if all doors left open as we live in a bungalow.

I have an Arrow multifuel although I tend just to buy logs. Nice to have option to use coal. Last winter I was paying £75 for a large tote bag of logs - lasted about 6 weeks. Lit a fire every night

DogInATent · 24/05/2023 00:06

All day, every day 24/7 for 3-4 months?
I would guess £400-£600 for constant running using a decent solid fuel in a multifuel stove. With wood you may spend less (probably not for decent hardwood softwood logs are always cheaper), but mostly because you'll let the fire drop overnight. This is based on our 8kW multifuel, and we buy a tonne of solid fuel going into Autumn before the summer prices end.

Cheers guys, that's been quite helpful. I was for the multi fuel but OH says he doesn't like the smell of coal. Weve been using a grate for a couple of years as it's in the backroom (1930s draughty semi, mostly due to me taking up the carpets downstairs) so only used occasionally. But going to have it as our living room...using the gas fire last winter was ridiculous price.
We were recommended nevis 5 multi fuel or a symphony solo 5 wood stove
