I'm thinking of getting Mirena coil out after only 8 months

I got it because I'd a cervical polyp and gynae recomended it because of my age, 48, otherwise I'd no period issues. I bled a lot for first 5 months, then the following 2 months I'd a lighter but longer period, but back to 28 days, but now this month, for last 3 weeks, I've continuous light bleeding/ brown discharge every day. Just when I thought it had settled.

I think it's affecting my mood also and I've had 3 really awful headaches since getting it, which I never get.

Have I given it enough time? I really can't stick the unpredictable bleeding any more.

I had a Mirena a year ago exactly for my endometriosis symptoms. I had the issue of my periods lasting for 3-4 weeks with a week or two break then weeks of bleeding again. Whilst it was getting me down it has really helped with my endo pain so the trade off for me was worth it.
It has only recently settled down for me and have just had 2 months of no periods so if you can stick it out a bit longer then I would try.

I have got it for exactly same reason, had lot of issues because of the same, mood swings, gained 10kg weight, gastric issues, skin problems etc, contemplated of getting it removed, consulted a number of doctors but they have advised against it. Hence sticking with it for now :(

I had mine in for 13 months and it was dreadful. Virtually constant bleeding, much of it very heavy.

It never settled but I still had to push hard to have it removed. They kept saying that I should give it more time. I had had enough though.

It's touted as the panacea to absolutely everything. In reality, it works for some people and not for others.

I just don't know what to do. I think it's also affected my bowel habits! My periods were occasionally on the heavy side but manageable and regular as clockwork. Gynae said coil can help prevent return of another polyp, that's the only reason I agreed.

Yes that's true, it prevents getting polyp again. And yes it does affect bowel habits, I am highly constipated on most days. The periods should get regular after a year. It took mine 14 months to settle.

I've not had any periods on mine for about three years now- took about 18m to bed in but it made my periods lighter immediately. My sister had totally the opposite experience; made hers significantly worse and after three years and serious anaemia she's had it taken out. I think that if it's going to work for you it would be clear pretty quickly.

They’re the work of the devil for some people. Had one for nine months, migraines and bleeding for two out of every four weeks. Had it removed and felt like me again. Awful experience!

DustyLee123 · 23/05/2023 21:54

I spotted for 7 months and then it settled down. I then had the occasional very light periods.

shakeitoffshakeacocktail · 23/05/2023 21:58

I'm on my third, they take about 6 months to settle for me. And I can tell when I need them out as my mood swings were like a teenager, so tearful and angsty

So approx 3.5 years where they work for me and awful either side.

Plus constipation around when I 'should' have a period.

I have periods for the first 6 months then they get smaller and smaller.

I would tell you to go with your instincts after 6-9 months.

I know if I contact gynae he'll probably say give it more time.

You're just at the point when it's about to settle down and probably diminish your periods into not much. I'd give it another six months.

Myownself · 25/05/2023 20:06

It seems to have eased off today. One minute I want it out, another I'm thinking I've stuck it this long, maybe I'll give it another couple of months!
