How to get out of this situation at work

Going to be vague as it would be outing.

I got myself into a bit of a situation at work during covid and the lockdowns. I started doing a certain task that wasn't really my role or responsibility. It's a shared task. I did it out of goodwill because work was manic and staff were off sick or isolating so I was trying to be helpful.

Now that things are back to normal I no longer want to keep sole responsibility of this task, it's affecting my other work, but it's likely to cause some pushback from one or two members because it suits them to keep the status quo. Various complicated reasons.

Without asking management to intervene which I do not want to do, it would cause a massive conflict, I need to assert myself that I will still do the task, but not as it has been.

Xxx is not in my job description. I’ve done it for three years out of loyalty but we need to share this task again.

A and B who would like to do this and how would you like to share it out. Said in a confident voice with a big smile.

I think this is something where you have to go through your line manager.

Zebracrossings · 23/05/2023 20:11

I agree with both of the previous posters. I would like to add that go informally through the line manager and then after mention what @Wombastic said. You might experience some turbulence as they might have gotten used to you simply doing it for them.

Frame it as a question to your boss: "I've taken on this task, but would like to pass it back to its rightful owners. I'm anticipating blowback. Do you have any advice?"

That way, you're dealing with it yourself, but you'll be doing it in a way that your boss approves of. If you get blowback you can then ask boss for additional support.

I’d definitely raise this with your line manager exactly as you have here, you stepped up to help out but need this task to be split back out between the team now, it’s a perfectly reasonable ask.

Have raised it with the manager who agrees it should be split, but it will cause WW3 if the manager intervenes.

Really need to find a way to assert myself correctly. I have tried blocking out time to complete other tasks but one or two colleagues are quite forceful in pushing back telling people that "macncheese won't mind doing task x" calendars get changed without my knowledge.

It's a shit, thankless part of the job that nobody wants to do and I've been unwittingly lumbered with it.

Why will it cause WW3 if manager intervenes? They aren't doing their job properly if they can't manage staff without WW3

Cosycover · 23/05/2023 22:11

Is it the rota?

Say look peeps I can't keep doing this everyday and it's meant to me split. So shall we do a daily or weekly rota?

Hmm the CF colleagues sound a bit toxic and you’ve been enabling them? I accept this may be a leap?
