I want to go in the school holidays. Taking DD 15
I want to see Beatles related stuff ( will I need to prebook?), Albert Dock ( dont suppose the weather map is still there?).

We will stay somewhere like. Travelodge or a Premiere Inn ( for the breakfast) for about 3 nights

What hidden gems are there?

We might then go on to Morecambe for a night or two.

Thank you

There is a brilliant photography exhibition on at the Walker at the moment. It's Tom Wood. I was at the opening the other day and it's well worth seeing.

Prebook the magical mystery tour, if you like history we also did the western approaches museum, the real bunker underground they protected the shipping from. Not sure on age limits but the cavern club was great (saw a Beatles tribute band). Mercure hotel is an excellent location, kiosk on the promenade for breakfast is super friendly owners and cheap

whiteroseredrose · 23/05/2023 16:12

I think the National Trust does a bus trip to John Lennon's and Paul McCartney's old houses. Definitely need to pre book.

Littlesprouts · 23/05/2023 16:15

If you're going to Walker art gallery you can visit Port Sunlight, a model village, at the same time. 15 mins on train from city centre.

The gallery in Port Sunlight is the Lady Lever (all part of the Liverpool Museums though). Nice Flower Fairies exhibition on at the mo.

Definitely book the National Trust trip for John & Paul's houses in South Liverpool.
You can also now go to Strawberry Fields in South Liverpool.
The Beatles Museum is at the Royal Albert Dock.
Also recommend the Museum of Liverpool at the Pier Head.
Sefton Park is great, if you want some outdoor space, inc the Palm House.
Liverpool Museum is next door to the Walker Art Gallery in the city centre, opposite Lime St station.
Also worth visiting the two cathedrals at either end of Hope Street - also lots of nice cafes etc around there in the Georgian Quarter.
If you like theatre, consider a trip to nearby Prescot to the new Shakespeare North Playhouse - either for a guided tour, or a show (lots of good stuff for kids this summer).

Personally I'd give Morecambe a swerve, Southport is far better.

EpicChaos · 24/05/2023 02:17

Go on the ferry 'cross the Mersey, obviously.
You can get light refreshments onboard. Sorry don't know the current cost.
The Mersey pen and inks at times though.

Weather map long gone afaik and i think they knocked the yellow bus/subs on the head as well, following a sinking.

If you've got the time, like an OP, I'd give a vote for Port Sunlight on the Wirral, all the houses are exactly as they were, and there is an interesting and free museum. It's not particularly exciting for a 15 yo, but it isn't far to go on the train, and it is a nice trip out.

RogersOrganismicProcess · 24/05/2023 05:57

Do either of you like cats? There is a nice cat cafe in the city centre. If you are meat eaters an amazing Brazilian restaurant!

We went recently and stayed in the YHA at Albert Dock. We went to:

  • the Anglican Cathedral and up the tower for a view over Liverpool
  • museum of Liverpool which was interesting
  • ferry across the Mersey
  • Crosby beach to see the Antony Gormleys
  • cavern club in the afternoon when they let in kids. There were 2 different singers in the 2 rooms, loads of Beatles covers.
  • had food on Bold St

Have fun, Liverpool is a great city!

SequinsandStilettos · 24/05/2023 06:33

If you have a car, Crosby beach is a must. Easy to get to from Liverpool and fab.
Knowsley safari as a second day trip.
Docks and Tate can be done in an afternoon.

AuntieMarys · 24/05/2023 06:38

You can go up to the top of the Liver Building which is great.
Crosby beach definitely.
Lark Lane...Pippins Corner do a great breakfast
The graveyard by the Anglican cathedral

Mayvis · 24/05/2023 06:46

We have also stayed at the YHA which is within walking distance of Albert Dock (then we went into the Premier Inn just for breakfast).

The Beatles Experience at Albert Dock was great and took Tesco Clubcard vouchers. The Museum of Liverpool was interesting too, I’d have liked to have spent more time in there and it was free.

Catsonskis · 24/05/2023 06:50

Have a wander around the Albert Dock definitely and along the pier head to the three Graces and the canal.

walk back up through Liverpool one, the big shopping area and then head down Bold Street
head up the hill to the Bombed out church (literally the remains of a church that was bombed in the war but very pretty and interesting). On your way up if you fancy a drink Arts Bar in the Masonic hall on Hope street is fab with love artists of all kinds on.

go for a walk around Paddy’s wigwam, the “new” Catholic cathedral, really interesting as it’s in the round. The catacombs are interesting too.

then walk across (and up the hill) to the other cathedral and you can climb to the top for amazing views of Liverpool.

on your way back down, go down Duke Street, stop in Duke Street Market if food.

have a walk up to the World Museum, z Walker Art Gallery and St George’s Hall, the latter has a really good small museum about when it was used as a court house - hidden gem!

head back into town and go to the cavern club etc around Matthew street.

then head towards the Baltic triangle, lots of cool and quirky places to eat plus an amazing ghetto golf for evening entertainment

i think someone’s mentioned up thread but the Williamson tunnels are also a hidden gem

OldTinHat · 24/05/2023 07:03

I made a similar post a couple of weeks ago (also going next week) and got some great suggestions. I don't know how to link the thread, though.

Paramummy3 · 24/05/2023 07:06

Take the legendary ferry across the Mersey, eat at the Baltic market, maybe see what’s on at the theatres as there are some lovely theatres. Also see if there is anything interesting on at the cathedral (they have had exhibitions like the giant globe etc). Shopping in Liverpool one, it’s great even for a browse.

MrsPatrickDempsey · 24/05/2023 07:09

Another recommendation for both of the cathedrals here. They are incredible pieces of architecture.

nowinhouse · 24/05/2023 07:12

Im not into football particularly but ds is. The anfield tour was brilliant. Lots of free museums in liverpool op.

RedDoughnut · 24/05/2023 09:31

@OldTinHat please come back and tell me what you liked. Thank you!
