London with an almost 5 year old

I ironically work in London some of the time but rarely bring my son here. I promised to bring him in half term and wondering if anyone has any gems they could recommend. He loves cars, trains, buses and cabs, oh and cake! so he will be delighted just doing the trip in. He also wants to go to the big lego shop. I want to avoid the natural history museum and the science museum as we have other plans for those with friends later in the year.
What gems can you recommend for us to do the rest of the day?

You could do the transport museum. We took my DD (6) in Feb half term and her favourite thing was the Thames clipper boat. She absolutely loved it and wants to do a longer trip next time we go. She also bizarrely loved fortnum and mason but she is a big foodie kid.

The cable cars at docklands could be a good thing if he likes transport as well.

The transport museum sounds perfect for him followed by afternoon tea on a red bus

He might really love the driverless trains on the DLR, especially sitting in the front. You could see how many different forms of transport you can do in one visit.

Transport museum - or mail rail? Might he a bit young for that, looks epic but haven’t made it there ourselves yet!

If you’re getting into Waterloo then super easy to do a loop say Waterloo-transport museum-bens cookie and street performers at Covent Garden-Lego shop-then maybe bus via Big Ben back to train.

Postal museum. much more interesting than it sounds and has an under 7s play town.

there are actually a few Lego shops around london - Leicester sq is the biggest but there are often lines outside so be warned.

Transport museum, perfect. Eat in the the new ish food court in Covent Garden

Coffeesnob11 · 24/05/2023 12:57

Thanks all. I have booked the mail museum and the kids play bit that's attached. For one of our future trips I have booked peppa pig afternoon tea on a double decker bus too.

We loved the postal museum- you'll have a fab day. Exmouth market is really close by for lunch - we had an amazing pizza there that my son still talks about now.

If the weather is nice there is some really lovely parks. But indoor there is a Shrek immersive experience, its not quiet london london, but you can ride ponies in Richmond which some kids might enjoy as well.

BigShoutyRaven · 24/05/2023 13:51

You can get the river boat from the Eye to Docklands and then go on the DLR and sit at the front.

SeththeSloth · 24/05/2023 13:55

We booked an open topped bus tour for my DS (then aged 5) as he wanted to see all the sights of London - Big Ben, the Shard, etc. He really enjoyed it.

We did a public transport loop when my son was about that age - tube to embankment, Thames clipper boat to North Greenwich (lots of lunch options in the dome), cable car across the river and driverless DLR back to tower gateway. You can get a combined clipper/cable car ticket I think.
