Malaga or Granada for 6 nights?

We can't decide which -anyone have any thoughts? Don't want to split time between the two as we don't have a car and train travel will be expensive.

I'd go to Granada. Visited Malaga last year and I know it's a trendy travel destination but I didn't think it was particularly amazing. It was nice enough and there is certainly plenty to do. Depends if you want to be on the coast. I would think Granada has a bit more of the wow factor but it's a while since I've been there.

Granada. Malaga's OK but I don't see the appeal myself.

Both are good, we did three nights in
Malaga, and visited Gibraltar, Puerto Banus and chilled. That was last November Then we drove to Granada and went to Alahambra palace and to a monastery plus walked about and had tapas etc.
I do think six nights there may be too long.
What time of year was you thinking of going? Would you fly in and out if Malaga for either destination?

Malaga hands down. It has everything (the city that is), bars, restaurants, shopping, history, museums, architecture, a beach, a nice port area with restaurants and bars etc. and lots more besides. It is vibrant and a very nice place.

Granada is a university town. It is big and very busy, but quite honestly once you have seen the Alhambra and Albaicin and Sacromonte (famous view of the Alhambra), well that's more or less it. Others might think differently but while I enjoyed it, two days was more than adequate - for me!

The trains are not expensive if you want to go from Malaga to Granada, have a look at the Renfe (Spanish rail) website for prices, and obv cheaper if you book ahead.

I know you said you don't want to split your time, but in Feb we did Seville, Cordoba (fabulous fabulous), Granada and Malaga, two nights in each place. The trains were amazing, on time, spotlessly clean and not expensive. It is of course a personal thing and all that trekking around might not be suitable if you have kids in tow!

Just my ten cents.

Granada. So much history, so much to see. And I think the 'beach' at Malaga is horrible.

Thanks everyone - mixed opinions which is where I am too! We are going in early July and I know it will be hot but we have been to Seville and Cordoba and know to go on to Spanish time by out in morning, resting in afternoon and back out at night.

I am pleased I did twin centre but if I had to pick just one in July I’d pick Malaga as there’s a lot of nice places to visit in the area if you don’t mind travelling a bit.

We did Malaga and Granada in a week in January. It’s very easy and not expensive (about £14 for an adult) to get the direct bus between the two. Alsa bus is the company and you can check timetables and purchase tickets online. Both are great places but I think a whole week in either would be overkill unless you were going to do day trips as well.

Malaga every day. So much there to explore

LabradorsByTheSea · 22/05/2023 19:30

They are both great towns. Granada is absolutely heaving and I feel it’s much more ‘touristy’. But it has a fascinating history and culture. Malaga has lots to see and just feels chilled. To be honest though, you might struggle to fill 6 nights in either and I’d feel frustrated knowing I was just a quick train trip away from other interesting spots. We travelled between Malaga, Seville, Cordoba and Granada over Easter. The trains were cheap and very easy. Cordoba was probably my favourite town, a short distance from Malaga.

I don't think I'd want to do 6 nights in either tbh - we did Malaga, Granada, Seville and then flew back from Jerez and 2-3 nights in each was plenty (we did have a car though).

Another vote for splitting the time. The coach will probably cheaper than the train, Alsa is the Spanish version of National Express.

I'd probably do two nights in Granada and 4 in Malaga, because you can go in the sea to cool off as well as all the city stuff and possibly get the train to other coastal towns up and down the coast. Or bus to places like Ronda or Mijas.
