Can't believe I did this- I managed to accidently post a deposit envelope with a cheque into the Postbox. How do I get it back?

TIA

You'll need to wait for the box to be emptied. Or much easier, cancel the cheque you posted and start again.

I'd stand and wait for the postie to arrive

Do you mean an envelope that would normally go to the bank?

I think you're got no hope... apart from waiting by the postbox when postie comes to empty it and taking your chances. I'm sure they wouldn't be allowed to give people things back from the post box, but you can only ask. And take any forms of ID/proof that it's yours/that you're entitled to it. And keep your fingers crossed.

Can you be there when the box is emptied?
Only trouble with that, it may be emptied not exactly at the time the post goes.
I'd ask your local sorting office for advice.

I lost some money, and wondered if I'd managed to post it with some cards- the postman let me sort through the contents of the box when he opened it.

Posties cannot give you anything from the postbox - it is property of the King until it arrives at the recipient.

I assume the deposit envelope doesn’t have an address on it? If not call the sorting office the post box mail is sent to. If not you may have to speak to the writer of the cheque and ask for a new one.

Yes, I was taking it into the post office to lodge but was thinking about something else and automatically posted the envelope in my hand.

I did this many years ago. Phone Royal Mail up. I got mine back. I doubt postman/lady will give it you direct from the box for security reasons.

Thanks for the good advice - I thought the postie wouldn't be able to give it back so thanks for confirming that. I will phone the sorting office as soon as it opens. What a numpty! Lesson learnt.

Wee update for anyone else who might find it useful. I went to sorting office and was told that anything like this is destroyed. Postie wouldn't be allowed to retrieve it for me if I turned up at the post box. I asked the issuer to send me a new cheque.
