DS went to bed last night with a headache and sore throat, he's woke up this morning burning up, shivering, head banging, throat very sore.
He's due to sit his Chemistry exam this morning!

What do we do?! Send him in and try his best? I don't want to infect everyone else.
He's at a SEMH school so I've cancelled his taxi and plan to take him myself and pick him up straight afterwards but he looks so unwell bless him.

Ring school the second there's someone there and ask

OctaviaPole · 22/05/2023 06:52

Yep, take him in. School will have dealt with similar every year. If you can give him something to relieve symptoms and then collect after the exam?

Beamur · 22/05/2023 06:53

Contact the school. They will have protocols for this.
One of DD's friends fell ill during one of her exams last week. They've told her that her grade will be adjusted to be taken from just one paper instead of 2.

I'm surprised the school haven't already told you what to do in this situation. DDs school have come up with every conceivable incident on earth and have written down what they want us to do in each of them.

Ring the school first thing and ask their advice.

Ring school, they usually say go in and they apply for special consideration. You will want to get him seen or spoken to with phone appointment by a dr later today to evidence the illness.

The school while being what was needed at the time, hasn't been the best lately. Most of the pupils aren't expected to do well in their exams whereas DS is very academic. So it's all been very casual.

Luckily Chemistry is was on his worst subjects anyway so he wasn't expecting great things from it.

He's got a bit more colour now he's had tablets, a drink and a bit of toast so hopefully he'll be well enough to sit it and I'll bring him straight home.

My year 11 son missed his computer science exam on Friday ,he's been very ill this year and still recovering,he's now diabetic and insulin dependent, and his blood sugars, were low and took ages to stabilise after his maths exam ,his teacher spoke to the exam board and they seduces long as he has evidence ,from his Diabetic team about how it affects him they can grade him just one exam .

Happened to me years ago (chemistry to, co-incidentally). Things might have changed but the advice then was to go in and at least start the paper, then leave if needed. If you've done anything (I managed 4 multiple choice q's then passed out), then done the second paper, they could give an assessed grade whereas if I didn't do any, the highest I could get was a C. Stupid, but that was how it worked.

siriusblackcat · 22/05/2023 11:08

Just picked him up, exam officer said if we can get doctors evidence they can give special consideration and add on 2%. So now on hold for an elusive GP appointment.

DS said it was hard and he struggled with the equations which is usually his strong point. He's currently shivering under a thick cover on the settee. Such rotten timing.
