How to start weight/strength training?

I would like to start weight/ strength training, I would need to do this in my own home or garage, but have no idea where to start? Can I have some help and tips! Have started walking 5k on my treadmill 3 times a week and am going to start jogging this week as well!

I started lifting weights firstly with bodypump classes (would not recommend, it's very fast with little instruction!) and then following a programme.

You can find loads of programmes online (paid and unpaid) depending on your goals but if you haven't done any lifting before, I'd try and find a PT for a few sessions first. It's very easy to injure yourself! In terms of programmes, I really like Brett Contreras' Glute Gains (if you're looking for lower body strength- there's a book but it's online for free, check Reddit) and the Sweat app.

There's loads of stuff online. YouTube and instagram have many, many free workouts - start with body weight to see how you like it.

There is a website called her spirit which has a couch to 5kg programme which may help. It's a very positive site focused on women's activity.

I must say I joined a gym (just a pure gym) and I love it. I have a pt as well who I love more than many if not all of my horrid teens (joke obvs) but I get if you can't get there. There are some pts who do online training.

I am amazed how much I am enjoying this btw.

You’ll want a range of weights to work with as you need to progressively overload to keep seeing results. There are things you can do to keep overloading if you can’t access a big weight range, like higher rep ranges, negatives or adding bands to your weights, but it will be easier (and less boring IMO) if you have access to a range of weights.

There are lots of helpful videos for free out there to help with form when you’re lifting so that you don’t injure yourself. If you use Instagram then have a look at Megsquats, alexandra_redmond and cassolholm. There’s also beforethebarbell on Instagram which is a free 8 week guide for people who are new to lifting.

Kettlebells are a fun start. I started with a Kelly Holmes adjustable kettle bell with a max weight of 7kg. Now I swing a 16kg.

Highly recommend Caroline Girvan's beginner programme on her CGX app.
