Is anyone else becoming less tolerant of noise as they get older?

I've never been a fan of noise but now that I'm verging on middle age, I'm finding it increasingly insufferable. I'm diagnosed autistic which certainly doesn't help but it seems to be getting worse.

My street has always been on the quiet side but they've built some new homes in the next street and there's now lots of young kids there. Apparently none of them can play without shrieking and screaming as though they're being flayed alive. I expect normal kid noise, and there are others in the street, but for some reason practically all children now seem to feel the need to scream constantly.

A neighbour is using a pressure washer and that seems unbearable. I'm planning a move anyway but I think I may have to change what I was looking for and move to the middle of nowhere.(Slight exaggeration).

My Grandad was really intolerant to noise and I can feel myself going the same way. Of particular note at the moment:

  • people who use the speakerphone function to have a conversation on the train.
  • people who chew too loudly.
  • people who scrape their cutlery against their teeth as they eat.
  • my son, whom I love dearly, yelling into his headset on the PlayStation.
  • the volume of the repetitive announcements on the train.
  • DH's sneeze. It is a ridiculous volume, I'm certain he could try and reduce it.
  • the noise the tumble dryer makes Wyeth it's finished and is on it's anti crease cycle.

I struggle with antisocial noise, like people not using headphones on public transport, hearing the constant bass thud of neighbours music, neighbours letting their dogs bark constantly.

Unavoidable noise like traffic, kids playing etc doesn't really bother me.

The shrieking that comes from our local school playground during break time makes me think of Hieronymus Bosch's visions of hell. How do the teachers put up with it?

Yes , I'm looking at earplugs and headphones. I am awaiting an autism assessment and have ADHD.

Much of the above! After living in a semi with paper thin walls and kids next door who only had one record (still shudder if I hear Sugar Sugar) we struggled to finally get a detached cottage up a lane with only one neighbour, no kids. Bliss. Having put up with what many of you are still experiencing I have huge sympathy. I cannot tolerate noise at all now. I would ratherr live in a detached garden shed than ever live in a semi or terrace again.
those bloody pips on the BBC news intro, any background music that drowns out the voices on TV, and they are doing it on radio 4 now! Documentaries that play inane phrases over and over so you can't concentrate on the dialogue etc. OH is he talks over the radio or TV makes me want to scream. OK, small irritations in comparison, but I think it is worse when you get older. Even more sensitive after having Covid.
i live quite and isolated life, suits me fine.

The kids shrieking does my head in too. Love the sound of kids playing, but not if there’s a shrieker in the midst. Why don’t their parents tell them not to shriek? Surely it annoys them too?

Damn babies who emit a high-pitched screech do it for me.

I’m 51 and I am getting so intolerant to noise, especially certain adverts on the TV currently - Lloyds bank with ‘This girl is on fire’. Also the Sainsburys one with ‘Hey big spender (saver)’. Just awful! I have to turn the tv over!

So glad I am not alone in this! I HATE that Lloyds song, I have to mute the TV, I googled and I think the singer is Alicia Keys, apparently she is an award winning singer, Christ on a Bike, who the fuck gave awards out for that? It the most awful singing voice I have ever heard in my life,

They suddenly start playing the Hey Big Spender song whilst you're walking around the Sainsbury's store. Makes me just out of my skin every time. Who enjoys/gets anything out of those jingles in supermarkets?
