Anything I need to know about wooden bath panels?

I'm refurbishing my bathroom and considering these wooden bath panels. I think they're pretty smart, but I'm sure the Mumsnet hive mind will tell me if there are any negatives that might put me off. Thoughts?

We have a wooden bath panel, in fact it's just laminated wood effect MDF. Absolutely fine so long as it's sealed so that it won't swell.

Thanks jacquec.

I suppose I should be reassured by not getting more replies, and now I'm tempting fate by bumping.

They need to be very well sealed to avoid swelling with water exposure. Maintenance is higher than for a plastic panel as they'll need repainting / varnishing / waxing fairly frequently.

DP is currently repainting my wooden bath panel while I'm lounging in bed 'working' i.e. on MN, and I'm pretty sure it's the first time he's had to do it in many, many years.

The only time the panel had to come off was during the search for the source of a possible dead mouse smell, so make sure you know how to get the panel back off again for any kind of rodent-based-death-emergency, leaks, etc.

Otherwise, I think it is very low maintenance and looks nice. Mine is basically thin wooden vertical slats attached to a board (poss MDF).

Put a door in! So one panel is on a hinge. It’s a brilliant place to hide the spare loo roll.

We had a bath panel installed with a sliding door to store things under the bath, it started swelling almost immediately. My carpenter has been specific re:getting a plastic one, but I haven't seen one I can stomach... maybe it's because this is a shower over bath situation that the first bath panel started swelling?
