Travel agents and travel reps

There's a travel agency in my local shopping centre but it's a counter as opposed to an actual shop. Every time I pass it, I remember all of the travel agencies which used to be on every main street and in every shopping centre. The travel agents always looked so glamorous in their smart uniforms. There would be posters for exotic (to me) destinations in the windows. You could pick up brochures. There must be a lot of ex-travel agents out there. Did you enjoy your job? Did you get good holiday discounts? When did you realize that the writing was on the wall in terms of the internet making you redundant?

Also, when you went on a package holiday, there would be a travel rep who would meet the group at some stage (at the airport? when the bus arrived at the resort? I can't quite remember) and give advice about what to do/where to go and you could book trips with them. Do travel reps still exist?

I'm not a journalist, by the way. Just feeling a little nostalgic.

There are still reps in resorts/at the airport if you go on a package holiday.

Hays travel is still going strong.

We have a Hays travel in our small town and it always appears busy. I have picked up brochures from there , but we tend to book it up online and just go there for the currency.
The big shopping malls used to have a few in the 90s , Lunn Poly, Thomson's, Virgin, a few travel bureaus for the money,
You see a few around still and a big Next near me on a retail park have
an agents in it , but you can't get the brochures.

Most package tours have their reps abroad. What I found nice with Tui was they didn't really plug the tours a huge amount and gave out information about getting around yourself. The arranged tours on coaches tend to be expensive.
They are about for any other queries , mostly in the mornings , but you have to search a bit for them and they often have an emergency number you can ring too.
It's not always perfect, but better than nothing and many are bi lingual too

I share your nostalgia for the bygone era of travel agencies. Many former travel agents indeed had glamorous roles, but the rise of the internet reshaped the industry. The convenience of online booking reduced the demand for brick-and-mortar agencies. As for discounts, travel agents often enjoyed perks, but these dwindled with time.
Singapore's public holidays 2024 include Chinese New Year, Hari Raya Puasa, and Deepavali, offering great opportunities for travel. Travel reps still exist, mainly at tourist destinations, providing valuable insights and booking options. While the industry has evolved, the essence of exploring new destinations and creating lasting memories remains. The memories of travel agents' colorful posters and the excitement of planning trips still linger, even in this digital age.
