Kefir with semi skimmed milk

Is it okay to make kefir with semi skimmed milk or will it kill off the grains? I have noticed an improvement in my IBS since drinking kefir, so I don’t really want to stop drinking it. My cholesterol is high at the moment. I’m worried that drinking full fat fat has increased my cholesterol levels.

Top Google answer below.
I can’t imagine the amount of full fat milk you drink as kefir will be solely responsible for your raised cholesterol though, have a look at some dietary advice re reducing cholesterol and see what else you eat/drink that can be contributing.

We do not recommend using skimmed milk to make kefir, although it is technically possible, the kefir that is produced is very thin and watery and it can harm the grains long term. Semi skimmed milk is OK but will not produce the best kefir.

Thanks for your reply @QuickDuck. My diet is pretty good, and I exercise regularly. Not much more I can cut back on. GP mentioned that it could be hereditary, but he asked me to look to see if there is anything else I can do. I’ve been eating smooth porridge for months, but apparently it’s the bigger oats I need to eat. I have made that change. Trying to think how to help myself.
I have put my kefir grains in semi skimmed milk. Hopefully I won’t kill them off!

@IVbumble thanks for the link to that site. Lots of great info on there. 👍🏻 ‘The Great Cholesterol Con’ sounds interesting. I will have a look. The GP has mentioned statins a couple of times. I don’t want to take them because of the potential side effects.
