York friends, how do you pronounce Acomb?

I'm a York lover and I want to retire there 😍

Google says that Acomb is a 37 minute walk from York railway station, so is it a suburb of York rather than a separate village?

And how do you pronounce it? Ta 😊

@VisionsOfSplendour maybe it depends where you’re from but I would assume gill like fish gills. Everyone I know that is called Jill/Jilly is spelt with a J not a G.

AnythingMuppetTM · 21/05/2023 14:07

Why isn’t it nice? I’ve family that moved there and it looks like any other suburb. Doesn’t it have a windmill? It’s practically Camberwick Green and you couldn’t get any nicer than that!

Huntler · 21/05/2023 14:19

I worked there in a branch office of a bigger firm , many years ago. We had customers from across York and the surrounding area.

It was common practice across the firm to refer to those with a touch of the Royston Vasey about them as "a bit Acomb".

It's a suburb that's quite a (not very nice) walk/infrequently served bus journey through congested roads from town. Avoid Chapelfields or anything near it.

TheBitchOfTheVicar · 21/05/2023 14:25

Well I used to work there in the late 90s when I was a university student and I liked it!

You mean you used to parrot the snobby things your employers said as a joke. It is a perfectly normal area. People ride bikes, people put out their recycling, people have barbeques in the summer etc.

I live in Holgate, which is next to Acomb. It's Ay-cum.
Other weird York place names:
Alne = Awn
Huby = Hugh-by

Came to add Alne to the list (although def not York, but North Yorks). If i had a £1 for every time pre smartphones, someone asked for directions to "Al - Knee" 😁

A-com
Born and bred in york
I used to live in dringhouses (many moons ago)
Moved back to tang Hall (huge mistake) and finally to southbank before moving away

<Waves to another from Dringhouses!> Did you go to the primary school on St Helen's Road? I went there <ahem> years ago.

Huntler · 21/05/2023 14:35

@notsayingmuch yeah probably.

I did notice that it gets the pong from the sewage plant if the wind's blowing a certain way.

UnicornMadeOfPinkGlitter · 21/05/2023 14:37

H went to school in aycum! It’s not there anymore. Beckfield secondary school. Even though he lived in Clifton.
York is a very mixed area. We moved away in 98 but still visit family and the areas have changed so much over the years.
and like a lot of city’s there are nice areas right on the edge of not so nice areas.
but as someone said above tang hall is now up and coming but when I lived in heworth everyone avoided tang hall as it was generally a rough estate. I used to go to a step aerobics class above a shop in tang hall. 😀

Do Yorkshire people say 'worth' or 'with' in names like that?

You're not going to like this: it depends on the place! 😆

OccultGnuNew · 21/05/2023 16:39

Does anyone with greater knowledge know if this is right?

I was told that the name Acomb derived from one of the earlier names for York - Eboracum.

Ebor eventually became York, the "acum" part of the name became Acomb.

I've always wondered if this is correct.

In our house it’s Hew with

JellyBabiesSaveLives · 21/05/2023 17:00

Hugh-wth, emphasis on first syllable. Possibly not bothering with the W that much

The Viking's name for York was Jorvik

SchoolTripDrama · 21/05/2023 18:58

*pronounced Yor-vik 🙊

WhatNoReally · 21/05/2023 19:31

It's HUGHwth and EYcum.
As others have said York can be very mixed, even in a small area. You'll get area of significant deprivation and poor housing a street away from lovely Victorian villas. Parts of Acomb are pretty dodgy and parts are lovely but that's normal for York.
When I was a child Clifton was really dodgy and now the house prices there are sky high as the desirability of Bootham spread geographically.

Loverofoxbowlakes · 22/05/2023 00:35

Harrow-gate (if you're posh or from there) or 'Arrugit?!?

Northernlurker · 22/05/2023 18:21

The windmill is holgate not acomb. Bits of acomb and woodThorpe are nice. Foxwood and chapel fields less so.
