How to carry on? - working in public sector

Ok I work in a local authority - have done for 22 years. I am mid senior level. I have a team of 35. I have been in that role for 5 years. I work with commissioners to deliver strategies but also manage operational services. I have always enjoyed by job.

now we are £35 million overspent as a council. We need to achieve high budget savings. I have been told I am going to lose 5 temporary staff at end of June. We have waiting lists for services and this week I have been asked to provide an action plan as to how we are going to reduce the waiting list.

also for the last 6 months I have been working in a strategy. We drafted a paper. At 11am it was all positive got approval. By 3 on it was pulled. Not going to the next stage - as there is no money available and they cannot see the benefit.

I really just wanted to scream. It’s such a waste of energy and I have a million other things I could be doing.

Looking around at other roles - the problem is most local authority jobs will have the same issues, I’m relatively well paid for my role. I have total flexibility to work at home and my work pattern.

What can I do to keep the motivation up?

Please share if you do find the answer.
It is just ridiculous.
Personally, my answer is to retire early.

Wish I could retire early but only mid forties realistically I’ve got at least another 15 years.

ok after manic job search and nothing suitable without big pay cut. I have decided to focus on the positives

I get to work at home with as much flexibility as I want about when I go into the office.

I can get my kids easily to and from school.

it has allowed me to move to an area by the coast and live in a beautiful area.

I am being sponsored to do a masters degree. It has added to
my stress now but will be worth it in the long run.
