Shiny, natural hair - possible?

After neglecting my hair for ages I'm finally getting around to some TLC. My current regimen consists of Revolution Bond Plex (shampoo, conditioner and bond restore styling cream). I then blow dry with a heat protection serum.

I've managed to get it less damaged looking but how do I go from dull to shiny?

My other problem is that I have natural curls... and anything I put on my hair just makes it straight. I don't particularly want to re-style.

Am I asking for too much??

My hair is probably close to this actress

(I'm of South Asian descent.. mostly!)

Priya Kansara - IMDb

Priya Kansara. Actress: Polite Society. Priya Kansara is known for Polite Society (2023), The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself (2022) and Bridgerton (2020).

The Revolution line is great for that initial fix, but it's not a long term one. I found my hair had a lot of heaviness after using it for a while.

The Love Curl range from Davines paired with the OI Oil and the OI Milk is the best! :)

Don't heat style or dye.

After you've washed hair, wash it for 30 seconds or so with cold water.

Straight hair will always be shinier than waves or curls as a general rule.

I think shine can depend on hair type. Mine’s fine, chestnut hair. Naturally shiny. No grey.
Sometimes less is more. As you said products weigh your hair down. What about just wash & air dry?

Yes, I've noticed. I'm so jealous of my friends with straight hair that don't need to make much effort for that shiny mane!
I'll try that, thanks but I'll probably still need to use a blow dryer. Otherwise my hair takes ages to dry as it's so thick

Blow dry on cool setting if you can :)

Just had a look - the ol oil and milk is a bit pricey, I'm guessing you don't need much of it though?

That's what I used to do, but clearly doesn't work.

I'm not sure there will be a pure 'shampoo/conditioner' that works on curly hair. Maybe if it's straifght

4 things that work for me are:

  • As poster mentioned above, run it under cold water for a bit after you’ve washed it
  • comb olive oil though, leave for an hour/overnight/however long you have and wash as normal
  • one from my friend from Sierra Leone, sounds yuk but works. Get few spoons of Helmans very best Mayo (other Mayo brands are available), comb through, wrap and leave for an hour/overnight/ however long you can stand. Wash as usual. I think must be the combination of eggs and vinegar, nice 👍
  • drink more water, put coconut oil in everything
  • Don’t blow dry or tong it

I get 3 months out of the shampoo and I use the mask instead of the conditioner. And then I purchased my second lot of the milk and and oil in November last year and I have maybe two weeks worth left.

I find you need loads less of pricier products :)

I was going through the Revolution in 5ish weeks!

have you tried looking on youtube/instagram for people with similar heritage who discuss hair products?
i'm a diva curl fan as well as morrocan oil curl product fan but have more italian type hair. not sure of the curl type though just know their products give me good results.

There are a huge amount of curly hair products around now, mostly since the Curly Girl method became popular. Super easy to research for your exact hair type - Insta is pretty good for this, just search for Curls and you'll be able to narrow it down quickly to find someone recommending solutions for similar hair.

Cantu and Shea Moisture are both great inexpensive brands for curly hair and Cantu especially do a whole range of washing and styling products.
