Films that would have a different angle now... eg, Devil Wears Prada.

I've been watching some old skool^ movies with my^ niece this week.

She's 17 and hasn't seen Devil Wears Prada, so that was on our list.

I'd forgotten how much Ann Hathaway's character's boyfriend and friends vilified her for being ambitious in her job and i think I might have felt sorry for her boyfriend when i first watched it 20(?) years ago.

I don't think the storyline would be the same now^, and this time round, I definitely was more in the 'tell him to jog on' camp.

We also watched Pretty Woman, which was even older. Funnily enough, i thought it stood the test of time much better even though 'man hires prostitute and falls in love' would be totally cringy. Julia Roberts
Character was still 100% her own woman, despite the difference in wealth.

Any other movies we should add to our list? Any previous corkers that need to get in the bin?^

In a way, Grease. Watching now , I get mad at Sandy for changing herself to get a man.

Mushroo · 19/05/2023 22:14

Sweet home Alabama - the New York guy she leaves is lovely!

Also might just be an age thing but I’m on the side of the dad in Dirty Dancing!

A movie that is still great though is Miss Congeniality

EconomyClassRockstar · 19/05/2023 22:15

Never Been Kissed has not aged well at all. My teen kids were absolutely horrified by it when we watched it recently.

CrumpetsandJammmm · 19/05/2023 22:16

I was just thinking about Pretty Woman the other day. It’s a fucking awful story really, that he happily uses prostitutes and they gloss over why she’s in that position. But as a film, it’s saved by Julia Roberts giving such an amazing performance with so much character.

CrumpetsandJammmm · 19/05/2023 22:17

Big has NOT aged well. Watched it recently and it’s horrific. She sleeps with a 13 year old!

SallySailor · 19/05/2023 22:17

The Breakfast Club. Girl ends up falling in love with abusive twat as far as I recall

Newnamenewname109870 · 19/05/2023 22:19

I always thought she chose the wrong guy in Sweet Home Alabama and I never liked Grease. I’m so glad I’m no longer alone in those views!

I rewatched Liar Liar recently and couldn’t get through it as I hate Jim Carrey’s character so much! Mrs Doubtfire is still a great film but she should have got rid of Robin William’s character a lot sooner.

But in Devil Wears Prada… Andi’s boyfriend was supportive. She turned into an asshole - wasn’t that what he objected to? She wasn’t being ambitious, she shelved her dream so she could roll with people she didn’t even like.
That always seemed clear?

Well yes, but she believes he's a quirky/ND adult rather than a child and he emerges unscathed if bewildered.

DorritLittle · 19/05/2023 22:26

I watched Devil Wears Prada again recently and I didn’t get that from it. I thought her friends thought it weird that she became so obsessed with pleasing someone and a job involving fashion. She ditched the job herself at the end to be true to who she was.

DutchCowgirl · 19/05/2023 22:27

Ghostbusters 1. Abuse of a woman when she is unconscious… terrible ways of communicating with women. Terrible stereotype roles for women…
I watched it with my 2 sons, but I wish I hadn’t. I had to explain throughout all of the movie that you really shouldn’t behave like this in the real world.

Duchessofmuchness · 19/05/2023 22:29

One to add to your list to watch that has aged well. Erin Brochowitz.

Inadvertentlyspring · 19/05/2023 22:32

I always, always felt that at the time but then I was in a very Devil Wears Prada type job at the time and used to mutter ‘stay in the car, STAY IN THE CAR’ to her.

I just hated how he was a chef, so he was clearly going to perpetually work the most unsociable hours ever anyway, AND takes a job in another city, when she has one of the plum jobs in the media universe that could open any door for her into almost any area after about three years of suffering, and he has to be a dick to her.

That's exactly how I saw it too. She absolutely lost who she was by turning into a "clacker".
Even better, when she eventually realised what she was doing and walked away, Miranda Priestley respected her more.

Really? I was always pissed off with them, it was a short term thing to get her where she wanted to be - I thought it was disgusting the way they didnt support her - happy to take the freebies she handed out, like handbags and phones, but fuck support

I love Grease, it was my all time favourite as a child but I watched it with Ds aged 10 the other week and I literally cringed at a lot of it. “Did she put up a fight?” - 😳

CaveMum · 19/05/2023 22:39

I love Mrs Doubtfire as a film, and adore Robin Williams, but these days I’m in total agreement with @Newnamenewname109870 - Team Miranda all the way!

We watched The Goonies the other day with our kids, it’s still a fabulous film but my god I didn’t remember the talk about “sex dungeons” when I watched it as a child 😳

There’s plenty of stuff out there to find fault with by modern standards, hell as I saw on a meme the other day - Romeo and Juliet is about a 3 day relationship between a 13yr old and a 17yr old where 6 people end up dead!

dropthevipers · 19/05/2023 22:43

pretty sure one which would be regarded as problematic these days is "Birth of a Nation". Gets coat.

Fencebreaker · 19/05/2023 22:47

Desperately Seeking Susan - watched again recently and really enjoyed it. Has the bonus of showing Madonna in her early days.

Birth of a Nation has been problematic for decades!

PuppyMonkey · 19/05/2023 22:49

Let my Cameron go.

Appalonia · 19/05/2023 22:49

I would have thought Fatal Attraction, but apparently not as it's just been made into a mini series...!

Appalonia · 19/05/2023 22:52

I wonder how young women react to Bridget Jones' Diary now? Has it stood the test of time? She drinks, smokes, is obsessed with her weight and, it could be argued, was sexually harassed by her boss?

IamSlave · 19/05/2023 22:53

Op these arnt older school and devil wears prada isn't about ambitious job!

Clawdy · 19/05/2023 23:00

Said lots of times I know, but at the end of Grease, Danny has changed to please Sandy, and is uncomfortably wearing a geeky white cardigan (although he does rip it off rather quickly when he sees her!)
