Do I need to burn the house down?

Just came in to find this on the floor, they frequently fly repeatedly into the windows at night so I am beginning to think they want to occupy the house.

Do I need to burn the house down?

I have literally just told DH that today I saw the biggest hornet I've ever seen in my life. It was on the pavement, crawling around happily. Horrific!

EmmaEmerald · 19/05/2023 17:54

Oh we used to have a hornet that was about three times that size or more

we'd text each other as it flew in and out of the flats via balcony doors. I remember someone chucked a towel over it and closed the bathroom door - lucky for her she had two bathrooms - and in the morning, poor Harry was dead.

Don’t burn the house down, then there’s nothing between you and them 😱

Invest in one of the weed burning thingamajigs on a long handle maybe?

bloodywhitecat · 19/05/2023 20:15

They are big buggers this year. I like your thinking @Piggypiggyoinkoink!

Fly screens?

Mostar · 19/05/2023 20:21

Never mind wasp killer, if they're all going to be that big we'll soon have to start shooting the buggers.

Fly screens?

I think it came up from the floorboards, one is rotten (and the landlord is dragging their heels about replacing it)

Is that an Asian hornet? Or are they more orangey? Either way it’s huge and I wish you best of luck in your new home.

FreezyWater · 19/05/2023 20:50

Burn it. Burn it all 😣😣😣😣😣

Lol, thank you. No, I don't think it is, I have just Googled it and Asian hornets have yellow legs. I think this is just a European hornet.

OP, that is 100% an Asian hornet and needs to be reported.

Hold on and I'll find you a link.

NewPinkJacket · 19/05/2023 20:57

Sorry you're right OP, they do have yellow legs.

DyslexicPoster · 19/05/2023 21:00

Burning the house down is reserved for the washing pile after kids have noro virus. I find hornets are quite docile. Maybe I have been lucky? Mind you I never try to get hold of them. I leave that to dh!

Hedgesfullofbirds · 19/05/2023 21:02

It is most definitely NOT a hornet, Asian or otherwise - just a common wasp queen which has hibernated over winter, has emerged because of the warm weather and looking for a site to start constructing a nest

Is it? All the pictures of wasps I found showed them with yellow legs, this one had brown legs and was at least 3cm in length.

So sorry @bloodywhitecat, you are absolutely right, it is a European Hornet, in my haste, to be a clever clogs, I misidentified it!

I have hover flies that pretend to be hornets. They are quite sweet really
