Yr9 Options Wales

Those of you with children in English language comprehensives - do you agree with compulsory Welsh GCSE option?
I think it's wrong at the cost of other languages / subjects for kids that are not interested.
It should have been incentivised instead of making it compulsory. There are many advantages depending on your career path, but it has to be right for you and I don't feel it should be forced.
one of mine would rather do 2 European languages but it doesn't work for their options. Interested in opinions of others in similar situations.

Yes but they are pushing the welsh laguage a lot atm, so cant see it happening. My DS is year 9 and it def limits his options. He's dyslexic and no good at any languages tbh but taking welsh is a waste of a subject for him. We live in a rural Powys though, 50/50 Welsh speaking area and the primary school has gone from dual stream to welsh only for reception age(they call it bilingual but its welsh). So even getting an Education in English is not a right anymore it seems!

We are considering a move to Wales but my son is dyslexic and this is a real concern.

I agree. Wales is falling behind in education as it is. By all means encourage the use of Welsh, but it should be optional. It's always useful to learn another language, but tbh unless your future career is in Wales, of what benefit is it those who have no wish to learn it?

It's interesting that so far you feel the same. I'm going to look into it further and see if there's anything being done about it.

BBC news

Have a read of this BBC article.

Less than 100 people to sit GCSE’s in French and German across the whole of Wales!!!

It is putting Welsh students at a massive disadvantage to their counterparts in England and elsewhere.

French and German used to be hugely popular GCSE’s. If you go to any secondary school in Wales now, you will find their GCSE classes in French and German are tiny. This is because the timetable space is taken up with Welsh.

'Under 100 to take French, German GCSE by 2030' - BBC News

GCSE French and German entries almost halved between 2015-2021 in Wales, described as 'alarming'.
