Hello, I have found these overnight in my garden. Does anyone know what kind of animal made it and how to deter? Thank you.

Hedgehog.

Roselilly36 · 18/05/2023 16:50

To spot the Hedgehog, wait until dusk, then they start their journeys, they tend to follow the same route. Lovely little things, very cute.

fliesdrivingmecrazy · 18/05/2023 16:52

I was hoping it was a fox and nothing as cute as a hedgehog!🙈

Hedgehog for sure. My mum and her neighbour have them in their gardens. The neighbour has set up a little hedgehog house in her garden and a little concealed motion-activated night camera which snaps them coming and going (at almost exactly the same times - usually @11.20pm and 3.20am)!

They're very beneficial to the gardener - hedgehogs can really power their way through the slugs. (Be careful if you put slug pellets down though, as that'll affect the 'hogs too).

@fliesdrivingmecrazy fox’s poo, absolutely stinks you definitely wouldn’t want that in your garden OP.

tailinthejam · 18/05/2023 17:11

It's great when you have hedgehog visitors, they eat all the slugs and snails in your garden!
That's why their poo is so vile looking

Pixiedust1234 · 18/05/2023 17:29

I can confirm it's hedgehog as I have had that in my garden for several years. I now have several wildlife cameras, several feeding stations costing a lot with different foods, a hibernation hut and ten water bowls.

Walk away OP , pretend you didn't see it!!

MonumentalLentil · 18/05/2023 18:16

They eat slugs when there isn't enough food, not because they like them, and they are actually not good for them. Slugs are responsible for a lot of hedgehog deaths

I leave cat food out for my visitors, chicken flavour. Apparently IAMS is the best, nutritionally and the hedgehog food is mostly rubbish, I have looked at ingredients.

Lungworm in hedgehogs
Lungworm occurs when there is an infestation of the lungs with parasitic worms. Slugs are carriers of lungworm and as a hedgehog's natural diet contains slugs, this is where part of the problem lies. A hedgehog can become very ill due to the amount of slugs it consumes within its diet.

Thank you everyone. Am delighted with the prospect of wee visitors in the garden, I'm a childminder so the wee ones are going to be delighted with this news!! I see a lot of hedgehog related activities coming up! 🎉🎉

Might see what wee snacks I can pick up for them tomorrow in the shops, cat food is on the list!👌

Hedgehog rescuer here… yup, definitely hedgehog.

A PP is right - don’t worry about specialist hedgehog food… it’s highly priced, low protein, high cereal rubbish in a lot of instances.

Some of the best food is Sainsburys or Tesco own brand kitten food - smaller kibble for the hedgehogs, and up to 30% protein which is what they need. No milk or fish derivatives. Don’t forget to put down water too. :)

And yes… hedgehogs that eat slugs/snails are usually starving. It’s a good of (basically) last resort for them.

Good luck spotting them in your garden... You’ll know if it’s hedgehogs that have eaten dried food as there will be lots of fine crumbs left behind in the bowl (and probably poo, unfortunately!)

So we put our cat food last night and some water, and it's gone today! Camera is on its way!

I cant wait to see some pictures! Dont be too disillusioned if all you find are foxes and neighbourhood cats. I've has to make a couple of (very easy) feeding stations to deter them. The cats do very good Daily Mail sad faces outside them 😂

AltitudeCheck · 20/05/2023 12:24

Definitely hedgehog 🦔 lucky you. There's lots of info online on what to feed (and more importantly what not to feed).

You can make a cat food proof feeding station with a clear under bed storage box with a hole cut in one edge. Have the lid on the ground and the box acts as a clear cover. The food stays dry, fairly slug free and you can still watch the hedgehogs. They have great hearing but awful eyesight so if you sit very quietly they will come quite close.

I've had one walk over my foot before!
