If you've managed to achieve actual black out in a bedroom, how did you do it?!

I have 'black out' blinds and curtains, but light still gets in round the edges of the blinds and at the top of the curtains (they are the type on a tension rod in the window recess for clarity).

How do you manage an actual black out?

I use these stuck to window, plus a black out blind and black out curtains with a sheet laid across top of curtain rail. Yes, i do get bad migraine

Like PP I use stick on stuff from Amazon for DD’s room - well one window, the other has blinds & curtains but being east facing is incredibly bright despite blacking out one whole window!

im wondering about a roller blind on the ‘open’ window 🤷‍♀️

Do the stick on sheets cease to work as soon as you open a window, though?

Roller blind + cheap black out curtain and tension rod from Amazon get me most of the way there! Worth it even as a temp measure I think.

Do I need a curtain pelmet? Would that do it?

This sort of thing, with a blind that runs in a track or cassette to stop light getting in round the sides?

Can you open a window though?

I bought some large sheets of black cardboard and blu tacked them directly onto the windows. The neighbours may have wondered what was going on but it got me an extra hour of sleep on light mornings!

Perfect28 · 18/05/2023 14:35

Not with the sticker on no. You're not going to be able to block out the light totally but also let fresh air in, if that's what you're hoping?

I've got velux windows in my bedroom and their blinds are truly blackout. We call it the cave. Not helpful if you don't have velux.

In dds room we have a stick on grow blind with a pull down blackout roller blind and black out curtains. The stick on is a pita with windows but they wake up with a sliver of light in the summer.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 18/05/2023 14:42

Get a sleep mask. Ted baker have some very pretty silk covered ones. Then when you do wake up, you don’t haven’t fumble around in the dark.

Tin foil taped over each window. Looks awful and I suspect the neighbours think we’re growing plants we shouldn’t be, but it’s cheap and effective. We can open the windows still for air. It does mean it’s permanently dark in those rooms tho.

I have a curtain pole that is a lot wider than the window, and higher up than normal. Curtains were taken down to clean and IKEA 'curtains' in grey colour were put up, not sure if they are meant to be thermal or light blocking but they were cheap. They are a weird kind of fabric and block the light competely when closed, it wasn't intentional and is a pain when I walk in and forget to switch the light on.
They are horrid, but temporary, however they are effective.

MonumentalLentil · 18/05/2023 15:05

Forgot to say, they seem to be linings rather than curtains but were sold as curtains.

drspouse · 18/05/2023 15:41

You can't open a window with a stick on blind and if your windows aren't square they won't work anyway.
We got cassette blinds for the DCs' room in our old house but thankfully now we are in a new house with equally non-square windows they are older.

welshweasel · 18/05/2023 15:42

Bloc blinds. Wish I'd got them years ago.
