Something to project dd11 skin graft site when abroad.

I don't know whether this should go in the clothing / holiday / child health section.

Dd11 had a skin graft to remove a large mark on her leg. Its between her ankle and calf. It's say 7x3".

In September it will be 2 years. The hospital have said the first 2 years are vital at keeping it out of the sun as it can change colour. Obviously we have to be careful forever.

We were given footless compression socks that were obviously really tight. They had Velcro and zips and basically indented the site. They were so hard to get on and off and were really painful. The scar wasn't raised and the Hospital said not to wear them. I decided to cut one (they didn't want them back) for her to wear when outside to try and project it.

The hospital have said these aren't really sun proof. She told me to look online.

What can she wear in Greece?

Long swim leggings / trousers? She's not that keen and are they sun proof?

Ideally she wants something just to cover just above her ankle not the whole leg and not both.

I'll get 50 factor but I want something that will 100% cover it. I won't be going away either so I want something she can do herself.

Thank you.

Something like a runners shin compression sleeve maybe?

AnotherDayAnotherUsernameForMe · 18/05/2023 09:18

Have you looked on ‘sunsibility’?

AnotherDayAnotherUsernameForMe · 18/05/2023 09:21

Hit send too soon 🤦🏻‍♀️.

Sunsibility are expensive but i got two pairs for MIL following a graft and they come in a range of colours, easy to hand wash when away, UPF 50+ protection… felt a bit odd but look less medical.

Saisong · 18/05/2023 09:23

Is look for something neoprene - that way she can probably still wear when swimming. Something like this?

I think the most reliable and least likely to slip etc is to wear UV protective leggings. I swim in a long sleeved rash vest and leggings outside due to massive sun sensitivity and they are brilliant, not hot, and I just pull a swim skirt on to walk to the beach and never have to worry about changing. Uniqlo do a great UV protective range

Hi thank you all I'll have a look.

I'm so worried that she will forget to wear it. She's going with my sister so I'll have to keep reminding her.

I really don't think she will wear the full leggings.

I wonder if the blue sleeve is sun proof?

You can get uv arm sleeves, depending on size of dd these could work for her calf?

xoomer · 19/05/2023 09:14

Oh god I've just noticed I wrote project!!!

Cut a piece of neoprene to size and tape it over the area with sports tape?

User478 · 19/05/2023 09:36

Could she put on kinesiology tape? Or would it damage the graft? It has UV protection? Athletes wear it so it might be cool enough? (And it comes in every rainbow colour or skin tones) you can leave it on for a few days so you could probably get away with putting it on and leave it until she's home (unless they're going for ages?)

Heartsnrainbows · 19/05/2023 10:55

I had the same as a child, removed a birthmark almost the length of my calve and as far as I remember, my mum had me wear a long sock with the foot cut off for holiday swimming.

You're best to protect it longer than 2 years though. I did for about 6 years and the scar faded so much I can barely see it now. Always use factor 50 on it though, for life and reapply often. It will always be vulnerable to skin cancer.

xoomer · 22/05/2023 09:38

Hi again. I'm still looking. I've seen those sports sleeves but I can't see any that protect from the sun and are waterproof and fit kids.

This is the best I've seen but there only do them for adults and they are £40.

Hi I've looked at this but daft see any with UV protection. Thanks for the recommendation.

Did a normal sock project it from the sun? I'd inscribe it slips down easily?

According to Google, neoprene will block UV rays so that skin and calf sleeve would provide sun protection if it fits

Mammillaria · 22/05/2023 09:45

DSS had some sort of spf rated sun protection sleeve that he wore over a tattoo last summer. It was on his arm, but probably the same size your DD would need for her leg. I've messaged him to see where he got it from.

Mammillaria · 22/05/2023 09:49

I think he's in lectures at the moment (or asleep!) so not responding, but I searched for "uv tattoo sleeve" and "sun protection tattoo sleeve" on Amazon and lots came up. Of course you only have their word that they are factor 50+

xoomer · 22/05/2023 09:50

She's 11 but in 9/10 clothes. Tall but skinny. Thank you.

Amazon keeps popping up but as you say you can't always trust them.

Young gymnasts wear those leg support things that you have put a photo on of so you must be able to get small ones

I had over the knee ones so yes, they stayed up and protected it.

xoomer · 22/05/2023 17:30

Hi all. I should have said I don't want a compression sock as they feel tight.
