What do people actually think this means?
I’ve just had an encounter with a very angry man accusing me of “pushing in” when I used the right hand lane and merged.
What do people think the lanes are for? I phoned my friend and she said “well you did use the naughty lane”
Honestly if people merged properly there would be less traffic on those roads!

I think a lot of people simply don’t understand the rule, or don’t realise that merging in turn/zip-merging is perfectly ok.

Scotland tends to put these signs ahead of merge zones to remind people. I’ve not seen them as much when I’m driving in England, maybe the Highways Agency should get some more printed up?

These would make life so much easier, so many drivers don't understand your supposed to merge. It would do some people blood pressure the world of good to see signs like this.

Having said that we have a duel carriage way temporarily going from 2 to 1 lane.
Everyone sits in one lane causing huge queues including blocking 2 large roundabouts, so they have now included a sign which says use both lanes and you still get twats blocking the empty lane with about a mile before the roads merge.
It's really unbelievable.

As is the norm for UKs roads the official rule of the road is one thing and the actual general standard is another

The rule of the road is to use all lanes, then slot in nicely at the actual narrowing point
eg odd numbers on the left, even numbers on the right

5 6
7 8

Number 1 drives to the new single lane, followed by 2 with number 3 letting them in before following and 5 waits for 6 etc

But what happens in practice is

1 0
2 0
3 0
4 0
5 0

6 7 & 8 are approaching, they see a wide open lane
6 obeys the highway code
7 tries to do the same

1 6
2 0
0 3
4 7
5 0
8

Everyone is swearing at horrible number 6
3 has pulled across to block 7
7 is flashing their lights and shouting wtf to 3
8 shakes their head at 6 & 7

Instead of 8 vehicles fitting in the length of 4
we have a length of 6 and road rage

PS I forgot what happens next, a few possibilities
1 & 2 push through bumper to bumper blocking 6
4 & 5 do the same blocking 7
3 has a few outcomes
Do 4 & 5 negotiate enough inches to let 3 squeeze around 6 but keeping a block on 7
Does 8 straddle to make a new block for 9+ or ram their way through 7, 6 and perhaps even 3?

Does someone over do the bumpers and either a low speed scratch and dent occur, or an instant acceleration into a short distance crash?
Two drivers get out for a face off egged on
by those behind
The road gets fully blocked with miles of tailback
After minutes of face off & grunting the drivers get in and disperse

A line of tailback crawls along until suddenly the road is clear, wondering what on earth happened

The reason for not stopping in one long lane one on a dual carriage way just because it becomes a single up ahead is because that’s how you should filter in …… everyone queued up with an empty lane beside them is contributing to a tailback double the size it should be

What everyone in front should have done was to balance out two by two AND then let each other filter in at the end
But because a driver thinks no one would let them filter in they pull into a queue as early as possible

To me, merging is something you are doing while in motion. So as long as the queue is moving and people are getting towards the merge point and merging harmoniously, all good. People racing up the outside lane and then STOPPING is not merging. It's pushing in.

How is it pushing in just because more people chose not to use the empty lane?! It's there to be used!
