Child’s Laptop/Tablet Advice

HappyHaribo · 17/05/2023 21:58

Looking to buy a laptop/tablet for an 8 year old. She would be mainly using it for typing stories, making up PowerPoints for school, and maybe some games. Ideally want something with child-safe browsing that limits social media etc. Does anyone have any recommendations for ones that would be decent? Are the Amazon kids specific tablets worth getting?

Both have been compiled based on Mumsnet recommendations as well as advice from tech experts. We hope they're helpful! Flowers

Amazon fire tablets are crap.

I would get a chromebook.

Thanks! Interesting to hear, I’ve only really heard good things about them, but not entirely sure it’s what she’d want.

Amazon tablets are terrible.

What's your budget?

I won a Chromebook and we’ve turned it into the homework laptop. We were really impressed with how easy it was to turn on parental controls at a range of levels. DS1’s school also has Google accounts for them so we just hooked him into his school account which feels ideal.

We’re figuring she’ll probably break it after a couple of years anyway and it’ll need to be replaced, so probably looking at no more than £200.

Another one to say avoid Amazon Fire - they do din on he Android operating system but Amazon muck about with the interface so you need to jail break it up get a lot of the standard apps.
I would recommend a Chromebook or the Nokia might like this at John Lewis: www.johnlewis.com/nokia-t20-tablet-android-4gb-ram-64gb-10-4-2k-hd-deep-ocean-blue/p6225779?s_share=jlappdroid T20 Tablet (which you can control via Android's Family Link app from both Android & Apple phones). You could pair it when a Bluetooth keyboard - so that can be used for typing & then the tablet is of use for travelling & watching stuff. I set up the second options for my nephews (aged 6 & 3) and their Mum is very happy
