It was very, very loud! Really scared me, seemed so close to the house

Chasing a plane or doing manoeuvres/practising? I’ve seen two of them playing chase with each other before - I assume it’s a set training routine but it’s pretty fun to watch!

Probably training.

Was it one of these ones? There are two that have followed a similar route, they've been doing loads of training up and down the coast for a while now (I'm up in east Scotland and we've had them at times too but most of the exercises up here haven't been showing on FlightRadar or Freedar).

I've just found Cougar61 and Cougar62 on flightradar too.

Private Owner isn't RAF is it?

How do you know they are chasing a plane?

We live in the middle of nowhere in France and often get fighter jets coming over our house. Yes, they are very loud, but they're not chasing anything, just doing their regular thing.

I think DH said they weren't RAF but another country's air force and we weren't sure why it said private owner. We've definitely had the Cougar call signs up near us before when RAF exercises have been going on too but there have been a range of other air forces involved in what we've seen around us.

Thanks all-there's a commercial jet type plane and two smaller ones seemingly in hot-pursuit!

Detecrive work on Google etc so not a guaranteed sources.

These two aircraft are owned by Draken, which is a company that provides training aircraft for Air forces.

Which would make sense for a training exercise.

Oakbeam · 17/05/2023 17:19

The planes are privately owned. The company provides training services for the RAF.

Thank you-I am reassured!

The training company might be what DH explained to me. I can't ask him at the moment but that makes sense.

We're obsessed with checking Freedar and FlightRadar whenever we hear something. We live near a military base so they're often involved in exercises or they train out to sea near us and often fly quite low over our street. I've even begun to recognise the engine noises of certain ones and know what it is before I check it. DH is former RAF so he knows a few from their sound from then too.

It'll be training..FWIW always going out training against your mates flying your own aircraft type (e.g. RAF, Typhoon against Typhoon) has limitations as isn't realistic.

As a result as pps have said there are various private companies who provide aircraft that operate in a way that simulates potential opposition types and tactics.

Since they are not MOD/RAF operated they get the Flight Radar tag of "Private Owner" or similar..
