Do I need yet another pair of glasses just for laptop use?

I have glasses for reading and glasses for driving.

I used to use the reading glasses for my laptop too.

I have new reading glasses that I'm not getting on with at all. There not great for reading documents - one of lenses just seems smudged but is clearly not dirty. I am very conscious of the frames - whereas I wasnt before (and they're the same frames). And they make the text in my laptop illegible.

Have made an appointment with the optician. They are very nice there and not a rip off but she indicated that I probably need a third pair for the laptop.

Do people really have 3 types of glasses? To be honest I'm not happy to be shelling out again after just doing that a few weeks ago but I cant read from my laptop so will have no choice.

Yes to separate screen and reading glasses - and varifocals as well. They work fine.

I’ve just recently had to get computer glasses. I’ve had varifocals for a few years but they just weren’t working for me.

When I asked about ‘computer glasses’ at the optician the dispenser said that she was wearing hers at that moment and yes, they are a thing.

Stupid question but have you tried no glasses for laptop?

Oblomov24 · 10/06/2024 05:06

I have this problem but don't want varifocals.

I have varifocals. I explained to the optician that I wouldn't be able to cope with them when they insisted I need them for laptop work. So now I have two pairs of normal glasses for close up work and reading and a pair of varifocals sitting in a case.

I’m a bit suspicious about this idea of separate glasses for working on laptop. I’ve never heard about this and I know quite a few people who have 2 pairs : distance and reading me included. When I was prescribed reading glasses it was explained me that they would be for ‘close’ work : reading, sewing, working on laptop and similar .

I am too but then the last time I went to the opticians, I was (and I use this word correctly) coerced into buying six pairs, at a hefty price. I bought four.

OP, can you change the lighting on your lap top? I find the mellow lighting helps. The blue lighting isn’t good for anyone’s eyes.

I have progressive lenses (what you call varifocals) and initially I didn't like wearing them when using my laptop. However, I am wearing them at the moment and they are fine so I've obviously got used to them. I hated the days at work when I had to take my glasses off every time someone came to the counter, and then put them on to look at the computer.

My glasses also work to read in bed while lying on my side (a pp said they don't).

I have varifocals, plus reading glasses and computer glasses. Its a pain to have 3 but once your prescription gets to a certain point one pair of varifocals doesn't work for everyone. I can do a presentation with the varis.

Walkinginthesand · 10/06/2024 06:03

Been using intermediate glasses for laptop for about 5 years now and haven't looked back. The difference they make is clear when I put on my reading glasses by mistake when using the laptop.

bumsntums · 10/06/2024 06:17

Like someone upthtead I just use cheap, old reading glasses for the computer. So for reading I need something like a - 3 and for the computer -1.5 ( just to give you an idea of what I'm on about). Less than a fiver. Definitely worth experimenting with before splashing out on expensive ones. I get mine from Sostrene & Green, they've got some nice frames. I do also have some mid price varifocals with reading at the bottom and computer strength above which work well.

I am the same. I resisted varifocals until it became too much of a pain to keep switching during events such as the theatre (switching between reading the programme and looking at the stage) and the clincher - going to a conference where I was again switching between the programme/laptop and the presenter (or being the presenter myself and looking at the audience and my laptop)

I use them more often now - watching TV, driving, times when I only want to take one pair of specs with me.

My computer ones sit by my computer and are only used for prolonged computer use. I can (and do) use my varifocals but the field of vision is much smaller so they are less comfortable.

My reading glasses live in my bedroom and are used for my proper reading at the end of day, where I'm snuggled in bed with the kindle about 4 inches from my face. Again I can use my varifocals, but would rather not.

The issue I have now is that I would benefit from glasses while I do my sports (run, cycle, swim). I don't really want to wear my expensive varifocals for running and swimming. I might look into contacts but I feel they will be v expensive.
