Cat keeps waking us up

Hi,

A cat that's not ours keeps sitting outside of our door, bedroom window, son's bedroom window and screaming so loudly, but only at night. This has been going on for a couple of weeks now. It's not ours and it keeps waking us all up several times a night. It is so loud! My DH is fed up, he has chased it away, has used our son's pistol to spray it but it keeps coming back. The lack of sleep is really getting to us all, especially DS.

We have lived here 7 years and this cat isn't a neighbour's cat and wears no collar. The previous owners owned a dog, not a cat. I'm also worried that neighbours will think it's our cat and will get annoyed at us.

Any advice to get it to go away?

You could try those cat scarers that make a high pitched noise (might bother your son though).

I could try one, hopefully it'll go away after a couple of uses. Thanks

Do you have a queen in heat?

No, we don't even own a cat. 🤷‍♀️

Those sonic noise things hurt my ears like hell and I'm in my 40s. Please don't use them, your neighbours and son will not thank you. Do you have a cat of your own? It sounds see though it's calling another car and it's shagging season!

Plenty of water to chuck at the cat, block the access to the windowsill etc, cover the windowsill / doorstep in tinfoil?

Have you asked whose it is on a local Facebook group? Get a photo and put it up.

Possibly one of your neighbours do, it sounds like a Tom shouting for a shag lol

Oh right, thanks for the tip, wouldn't want something even noisier.

No we don't own a cat, don't know who it's looking for for a shag at my house!

Thanks for the tinfoil idea, will try that.

I could ask, i'm not a part of any local groups but could join. Just have to get a pic of it in the dark.

The scarers are supposed to be silent and not heard by adults, but I know few adults who can't hear them. It's an extremely high pitched sound, goes through your brain and for me it hurts my ears - I find it really quite painful to walk near them when people have them in their gardens.

If you're directing it into your own garden and only at night so no one in line of the sound, it might work for you and not affect your family / neighbours?

I'll look into them more, wouldn't want the solution to be even worse.

Try a water pistol. The vet suggested we use one to stop our NDN cat coming into our garden & attacking our cat. He hates water and leaves quickly now, at just the sight of the water pistol.

mackerelskymackerelsky · 17/05/2023 14:25

The scarers we have come with different settings. Our neighbours have it set to a quite a loud, high pitched noise but ours is like a loud clicking noise? You'd never hear it through a window but it's kept the cats away, not had a single one in months. Don't be so quick to dismiss the idea, we tried everything and it's been the only thing that worked. Wish we'd bought them first.
Can you take a photo of the cat and post it to your local FB as well? Maybe they will want to keep it in at night if it's annoying people (probably won't care, but worth a try).

Lindy2 · 17/05/2023 14:38

Keep going with the water pistol.

It might take a little while for the cat to learn but if it realises it will get squirted every time it will very likely move on.

orange peel on the window ledge.

This is just one of these things in life and has been going on for years...

Flufs · 18/05/2023 03:12

I’d probably let it in if I couldn’t get rid but not feed it. Just water.

I'm not letting the cat in, we don't want it around 🤦‍♀️

Tinfoil seemed to be a hit and miss. Maybe it avoided the foil on the door mat? As it mainly screamed at the door. I've wedged foil along window sills between plant pots and the foil moves around a bit so i'm hoping that put the cat off.
