When you're selling something and people ask why you're selling it?

This seems to be happening a lot lately. I've been selling something and when the person comes to buy they ask why am I selling it?

Is it just awkward small talk or they checking out I'm not dodgy?!

It depends on what you’re selling. I try and buy most things second hand, but with things like electrical items, especially white goods, it’s usually listed as ‘in good working order, just got an upgrade’. That always makes me think if it’s working so good then why did it even cross your mind to upgrade it? I’d never buy a second hand hoover or most kitchen appliances for eg in most circumstances. It sounds a bit better when listed as ‘moved into a property with intergrated appliances so not needed.

Never been asked that before.

Surely the answer is going to be 'because I don't fucking need it any more'

I agree, it depends what it is, but I've never been asked either!

If clothes/shoes, depending how old the item is, then 'it was gifted but doesn't fit and I didn't have the receipt' or if an older item 'I've change weight due to ill health'- generally stops further questions!

If furniture- you are moving house, changing the layout/rooms around?

I'd try to keep the answer positive. Not 'well, its such an odd shaped top that it made me look so drab' or 'that sofa stains so badly, so I need a new one'! 😄

One was my car, why am I selling it? Think it was to check I wasn't dodgy. Second one was just a musical instrument.

This. I find the other answer a bit odd. Some items are more essential for people than others, but for some people a hoover or dishwasher or laptop or iPhone or couch or lawnmower etc is something they heavily rely on in life. The seller bought one at some point as they needed it, but now it’s for sale. Why do they no longer need it? Chances are it’s because it’s old or a bit damaged or getting a bit shit and they want to offload it before it becomes obvious. No one buys an item they need and then think I need it and it’s amazing but I’m gonna sell it for no fucking reason.

Even so, surely people should wind their necks in and not be so nosey!!!
