Genuine questions. I have rubbish GCSEs ( all E,F etc) and I work in a shop. Just keen to know if anyone has done anything more exciting than me?

DH left school with a D in food tech and lower grades in everything else.

He started off as a labourer for a building company, then got his machine tickets so still does some machine driving now. He also did his HGV license with them and has that for life now.

Then he joined the fire brigade. He had to re-do his maths and English GCSE to join but he did it with a lot of tutoring.

Im 38, & left school with non, ive worked in pubs & became an assistant manager, I left doin that at 23 as didn't want to do that for the rest of my life, I started working in an office as a customer service agent to then become a supervisor, then moved back up north & carried on doing administration jobs, even worked at an accountants & nhs, but I would suggest like someone else has, if theirs a center around where you live, where you can do your maths & English, do it, I did, I also did a free IT course to put on my CV, I don't know how old you are as you haven't stated it, but if ur younger, try applying for apprenticeships or on the job training, I had no idea what I wanted to be, I enjoy customer service & working in an office, no job is bad, its all experience, if you work in a shop, thats still customer service face to face

I left school with 2 GCSEs at c and above. Drama and Eng Lit. I write books for a living. My 7th novel will be published in September 😊. I didn't like school and found it hard to concentrate. I went to university as a mature student and found focussed study much easier. Worked as an LSA in a college after that. Did an MA with a full scholarship as a single parent then worked in PR which I didn't like much and wasn't very good at 🤦‍♀️. I wrote my first book when on mat leave in 2017 and I've been doing that ever since. I also teach creative writing and I love that too. The most useful education for my job was being an avid reader. My ds didn't excel at school or GCSEs either and is now doing BTECs at college which suits him much better. School isn't for everyone idt.

I have no GCSEs and am in an admin position. I am not stupid and could easily have worked my way up or done a professional qualification but chose not to.

My DH has no GCSEs. Now runs his own very successful financial services business earning a six figure sum.

I run a business and we’re hiring an account manager and I don’t even look at the exam results. I’m looking for someone with spark and drive/ambition and a genuine keen desire to learn now.

My partner has no qualifications of any kind as he was homeschooled in the USA. No degree, nothing. He got an office job through a temp agency and is now a very senior systems analyst at a major university, making 65k. Every job he’s ever progressed to has asked for “A Levels or equivalent experience” and he has the equivalent experience.

How did you become a nurse with no GCSEs? Did you go to college?

Lottie4 · 10/10/2023 21:14

I'm older and CSEs were the thing when I was at school, so I left with the equivalent of two Cs, the rest lower at GCSE level. Highest level job I had was secretary to the Senior Partner if a law firm with four separate offices. Over time things changed and I now do shop work and lunchtimes at school - I'd say they're mine stressful and pressurised that my highest level job!

Had a dire experience at school, a dreadful bottom of the heap state school that was subsequently shut down. All I wanted was to go to university but no one did. I left with two GCSEs in English and Art. Eventually got to university as a mature student, via an Access course when I was 32. Did a degree in English and it was absolutely fantastic, my dream come true! Got scholarships to do an MA then a PhD. Have worked as a university tutor, PG supervisor and self employed academic editor. Am now getting on a bit, and planning to wind stuff down to concentrate on my creative writing. I have a lot of books desperate to get out!

Dh didn't sit his GCSES. Years of bullying made him avoid school.
However he went to college and gained English Maths btech in mechanics.
Worked his ass off despite various setbacks. Got his MOT tester qualification. Got loads of experience under his belt.
Then opened up our own mobile mechanic business. Has built up a large customer base etc
. I have no GCSES, but help successfully run the company, and keep everything on track

5 year plan is to have our own garage once the dcs are more dependant.
