Plymouth

It’s possible that we might be moving to in or around Plymouth for my husband’s job. He will be working in the dockyard. I’ve looked at a few maps and can see that it is on the western side of Plymouth.
Can anyone recommend good places to live where he can commute in from? We would probably prefer to live somewhere outside Plymouth. Children are all grown up, so no need to worry about schools.
Thanks

It depends what sort of area/property you want. Also is he a shift worker or regular 9-5? That could make a big difference with commuting times. What is the maximum commute he is prepared to do? What sort of facilities do you want? Rural or town?

There is a railway line that runs from the Tamar Valley to Plymouth, and which stops at the Dockyard, so you could look at one of the places along there.

Calstock and Bere Ferrers are both lovely, but Gunnislake and Bere Alston have a bit more going on.

Explore the Tamar Valley Line between Plymouth and Gunnislake with its beautiful river crossings, countryside and the Calstock viaduct. Plan your trip.

Thank you. His hours will be 9-5 or there abouts.
We currently live in Norfolk so are used to rural, although we are less than 10 miles to Norwich.
I think a village with some facilities - maybe a shop/pub.
I’ll have a look at the places mentioned too.

My hubby and I taught in Plymouth and we lived in Saltash. A trip over the beautiful Tamar Estuary. Saltash was a lovely place to live in easy commute for the dockyard. I miss it sooo much. Good Luck

Calstock and Bere Ferrers look lovely! I’ll check out Saltash now.

Yelverton is nice

Thank you for your ideas everyone.
If driving, does anyone know what driving in from Ivybridge or around there be like?

Assuming he has parking in the dockyard and won't have to allow for time finding parking elsewhere, you're looking at around 30 mins from Ivybridge if on the Western edge. A bit longer (5-10 mins) if on the eastern side as there's no on-slip to get onto the A38 heading west from that end of Ivybridge.

Calstock is lovely. Right on the river, train station, arty / gallery sort of shops. Couple of nice pubs. Footpaths all around. National Trust place on a footpath route nearby.

Plymouth traffic can be a pita. One thing happens and all the roads snarl up for ages.

Outskirts of Plymouth can be pretty rough. I'd go either right in the centre (Royal William Yard is lovely but £££) or outside in surrounding towns/villages.

Saltash is really nice but then I'm biased as grew up there. Definately avoid Plymouth.

Torpoint, and commute by ferry!
