Breakdown cover - yay or nay?

Do you have it? Is it worth the cost, or the peace of mind if you've not has to use it yet?

To clarify, I mean for a car

Yes , I have used it years ago.
It's a fortune to get towed , it's good for peace of mind.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 14/05/2023 22:58

We have breakdown cover included with our bank account so I’ve never paid for anything else. However when I though I needed their help, 120 miles away from home with ds2 I realised how basic the cover was. Luckily I didn’t need to call them in the end.

we now pay Start rescue for an annual policy that covers both cars for any driver including home start and rescue back home which is a great peace of mind as ds1 has recently started driving too.

user1497207191 · 14/05/2023 22:59

Yes, I’ve had it since my first car 35 years ago. Called them out probably a dozen times over the years. Easily paid for itself when you realise how much it costs for a call-out.

saraclara · 14/05/2023 23:07

Absolutely yes. Break down on a motorway, and the cost of recovery to a safe place (never mind to a garage or your home 100 miles away) will be massive. That happened to me (covered) and they towed my car 100 miles to my local garage, and took me and my daughter to the nearest car hire place to rent a car (cost covered by them) to get us home.

My car broke down on my drive a few weeks ago, and the AA took it to a garage as well as giving me three days' free car hire (including pick up and drop off)

It's absolutely worth it.

echt · 14/05/2023 23:08

God yes. But then I'm in Australia, and while it's far from the outback, it doesn't take long to be on back gravel roads, miles from any passing traffic.

Jellycatbat20 · 14/05/2023 23:10

Yes. Would not be without this cover, it has paid for itself several times over this year alone (between us we cover a lot of miles and our car is an older diesel).

Icanflyhigh · 14/05/2023 23:18

Yes! We've got a dozen cars between us and one of them is always breaking down - used it last week for an old military land rover.
We don't use AA or RAC, they're rip off merchants and have left us stranded for hours too many times.
We use autoaid now and they're brilliant - well worth the 25 quid annual membership!

Cupcakequeen75 · 14/05/2023 23:27

Yes.
Had it for 41-years and the piece of mind it gives cannot be understated.
Used it many times over the years from breakdowns, locking keys in car to accidents, haven't had to use it due to hospitalisation (yet) but I know people who have.
Of course you have to choose your level of cover but we have all the bells & whistles and having had the policy so long it covers all our vehicles (including our outsized Motorcaravan which is excluded from new, car biased policies).

DannyZukosSmile · 14/05/2023 23:37

100% YES. Why would you NOT have it? Unfathomable to not have it. Ours is about £9 a month. Paid for itself 10 X over. (Over the years..)

EmmaEmerald · 14/05/2023 23:38

Yes
why would you not?

UsingChangeofName · 14/05/2023 23:58

Yes, had it over 40 years. Can sometimes go a while without needing it at all, and then it pays for itself two or three times over when you have a bad year.
Gives you peace of mind as well as being likely to save money long term.

Shop around though, AA and RAC can be beaten on price usually (will depend on package).

Iliveinacrapstreet · 15/05/2023 00:07

100%. Th4 AA do a cover for as little as £6 per month. I pay around £11 a month with Swinton. They use local breakdown drivers and are quick to come out to you.

rebekahnorris · 15/05/2023 00:33

No I don't, but if I needed it I would call them on the spot and join there and then

Someo · 15/05/2023 00:36

Definitely. We pay £7.50 a month with AA.

Pixiedust1234 · 15/05/2023 00:52

Mine comes with the car insurance. I always look for it when doing the comparison sites every year.

Kyse23 · 15/05/2023 01:18

Yes! What else will you do if you break down or your car won't start? I speak to people every day that don't have it
Mine comes with my car insurance but I also have key cover too and a few additional bits I added on - especially if you only have one car key

A friend was having a clear out and threw away a load of stuff on bin day. Only to find out her husband had hidden his car key in the stuff she threw away Blush and now they had no key...

LadyJ2023 · 15/05/2023 03:22

All with AA in our family and ye we were on holiday recently car broke down. They brought a free hire car and we got to enjoy rest of the holiday till our normal car was sorted. And now knowing how much my aunt paid for emergency recovery last week and what we pay for aa cover even for that one incident was well worth it plus the hire car

HelpMeGetThrough · 15/05/2023 05:01

Wouldn't be without it. I have a company car and had a tyre explode on the motorway 170 miles from home (survived that one, just!!) and no spare. Me and the broken car were recovered all the way home. All work cars come with full cover.

We have it on my OHs car, that we own, wouldn't be without it.

The hard shoulder of a motorway is an awful place to be, knowing someone is on their way to you. I wouldn't want to be stuck there, trying to organise a way to be recovered.

Sunnylassie · 15/05/2023 06:09

Decimate my worth it in my opinion. I also don’t have a spare wheel with my car, I had to call them out once as a tire had blown in such a way that the rubbish foam stuff was no help whatsoever.

Theraffarian · 15/05/2023 06:24

100% yes , used it a good few times over the years , even my mobile car mechanic has it , because he says if he breaks down he won’t necessarily have the parts with him to get going again .

EversoDisorganised · 15/05/2023 06:37

Yes, essential. We haven't used it for probably 15 years now as we have newer cars but got great value out of it when we had older ones and would never consider not having it.

Fififafa · 15/05/2023 06:49

Yes definitely get it. As already mentioned, it pays for itself many times over when you need to use it. I’ve had to use it a few times over the last couple of decades. It’s also worth the peace of mind when you are stranded in the snow, or on a motorway with kids in the car. Imagine trying to sort out recovery then

Fififafa · 15/05/2023 06:53

rebekahnorris · 15/05/2023 00:33

No I don't, but if I needed it I would call them on the spot and join there and then

Nice try but that isn’t how it works. You will have to wait for 24hrs before being able to call them. What are you going to do until then? This is from the AA’s website..

How soon can I use my cover? Your cover will start on the date you choose, up to 60 days from when you buy. If you pick today's date, your cover will start in 24 hours' time.

reluctantbrit · 15/05/2023 06:55

We always had it and now it's part of our bank account package. It definitely paid for it's own. We upgraded to call outs to our home, the standard was just when you were on the road.
