What would you do with this money (£500)

My much loved grandad died last year and we miss him every single day.

Today out of the blue my mum has given me £500! She says my grandad left her a little bit of money so she has given me and my siblings £500 to treat ourselves with. A little treat from my grandad ♥️

I’ve only had the money for a few hours so obviously don’t need to spend it right this second. I’m a single parent (although I do have a BF) with one primary schooled DS. I do alright for money, I can afford a holiday every year, can afford a few days out etc but definitely live month to month!

Anyway, I want to do something nice with the money and not just have it pay bills or get absorbed into my household budget.

I have been thinking I could take DS away for a couple of days then buy him/us something like a keepsake but I don’t know what.

If anyone has any ideas please send them my way 🤞🏻

Could you buy a painting or a print you love?

Riverlee · 14/05/2023 21:32

Can you have a holiday and buy a small painting to remember the holiday and your Grandad by?

BeagleMum1 · 14/05/2023 21:33

How about you split the money into two? One half spent on a memory making experience with your DS and the other, perhaps on a piece of art or jewellery?
Sorry for your loss Flowers

Riverlee · 14/05/2023 21:33

@MuggleMe Great minds think alike!

DustyLee123 · 14/05/2023 21:33

I’d hang on to it until the right thing comes along. You’ll know when.

CrowningAround · 14/05/2023 21:33

@MuggleMe that was my in initial thought but don’t think that would be much of a treat if DS, but I’m going have a little look around a little local gallery tomorrow and maybe have a look for something around the £100 mark? My grandad grew up in Scotland and I was thinking maybe something related to that?

I would do this - I'd put it into premium bonds while I wait

SarahSmith2023 · 14/05/2023 21:35

I'd buy a ring.

Augend23 · 14/05/2023 21:35

If you live month to month, would having it as an emergency fund for if something goes wrong give you peace of mind that might be worth more than a thing or experience?

Or maybe spend a bit of some art or similar as you said up thread and have the rest for an emergency?

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 14/05/2023 21:38

When I came into a little bit of money in similar circumstances I bought a bracelet that I’ve never taken off to remind me of the person.
Maybe a watch for your DS and an item of jewellery for yourself and a treat day /night out somewhere special?

CrowningAround · 14/05/2023 21:40

Ooo premium bonds are a good idea, I’ll have a look at them tonight.

@Augend23 i have a couple of grand in savings and have an overdraft so I don’t think I’d ever be too stuck (I hope 🙈), I live in a rented house so no worry of having to pay for a new roof or anything right now although I am looking to buy with my BF so couple maybe put some aside to help with that. I just feel like I need to do something special.

A ring is also a good idea but I’m a nurse so can’t wear it day to day but I’ll have a look as some necklaces as can probably get away with wearing one under my uniform.

thank you for all the lovely ideas so far!

What was your grandad like, what did you enjoy doing together?

We used to sit for hours at the dining table putting the world to rights. I bought dining furniture with an inheritance from my grandparents, which I have swapped years later with my brother for something else - he still uses the furniture and I use the other thing and reminds us both of our grandparents.

CrowningAround · 14/05/2023 21:42

Oh just seen the other replies, sorry I’m on my phone and it’s rubbish!

yeah splitting it sounds good, take DS away somewhere pretty and then get a little keepsafe if my grandad. We miss him so much 😔

@CrapBucket we used to sit and watch all the tea time quizzes together, he just loved having the company to chat to. We also used to go on holidays to Spain together (always the same place but it’s gone really expensive now so can’t really stretch to that).

I’m trying to think what I could get DS, his first suggestion is as Prime drinks and a domino’s pizza 🙄😂

I'd buy a ring but definitely buy something tangible to remember him by

thehappyhaggis · 14/05/2023 23:06

Hi OP, sorry you've lost your lovely grandad. Some people have suggested a ring and you said he was Scottish. I've attached a link to a beautiful thistle ring as an idea. This ring is lovely on!
