Out of season for the Balearics, Canary Islands will be better for reliable sunshine.

Bluemuf · 14/05/2023 18:03

I went the last weekend October last year and we had beautiful weather, 25 degrees and sun.

The week before had been wet though and the week after they were forecasting terrible storms..

SomersetBrie · 14/05/2023 18:04

Last year was unseasonably warm throughout Europe in October, it was delightful. Year before though, much cooler, Canaries or Cyprus a better bet.

cherrypied · 14/05/2023 18:43

Yes it's the last week of the season for uk holidays and new some place might be partially closed but it's half the price of canaries and because we want to take my mum who needs a single room it works out good value!

Friends went a few years ago and said it was glorious mid 20s and swimming pool
Weather! Just wondered if they hit lucky?

depends how important the weather is to you, you might be lucky, but certainly not guaranteed to have good weather in Majorca, late October. I can see the attraction, cheaper, shorter flight etc. but I would rather book Canaries and be guaranteed sunshine, or go earlier in the year to Majorca.

Chenford · 14/05/2023 19:18

Did Ibiza one October some years ago - it was decidedly chilly (jumper weather).

Did the Canaries one October - high 30°s.

CottonSock · 14/05/2023 19:22

Went as a kid.pools were cold and definitely not sun bathing weather. Nice enough for sightseeing.
I pick canaries due to reliability in October

hartof · 14/05/2023 19:41

I did majorca end of September and evenings were freezing, days were okay but not as hot as I'd experienced in the summer. Have you looked at the algarve? Should be cheaper than canaries and the weather is nice still.

cherrypied · 14/05/2023 21:49

@hartof is Algaeve reliably better than Balearics in late October ?

If so I'll have a look.

Thanks everyone!

For reliably good weather in October you need the Canaries, Cyprus or the place that everyone hates Dubai.

Everywhere else in Europe Spain, Portugal etc well it may be glorious or it may be a bit chilly. It all depends on how much risk you want to take and whether you want guaranteed sunshine.

A family member did Majorca one October half term. It was stormy and they had power cuts for several days. Said it was absolutely awful, pretty scary as no communication as couldn't charge phones and would never chance it again (although we're all going in August 🌞)

RampantIvy · 14/05/2023 23:01

The problem with picking a destination that is reliant on warm weather is that there isn't always a lot to do when it rains.

The Med get quite a lot of rain in autumn. Majorca is cheap at that time of year for a reason.

Businessflake · 14/05/2023 23:11

If the weather was reliable in Mallorca at that time of year then the tourist season would extend that far out. It does not. That tells you the risk you are taking with the weather.

CottonSock · 15/05/2023 18:45

I've done algarve in October half term too. 2 days of sun, one day solid rain, 2 days cold.
Now go to the canaries unless I can book last minute

LakeTiticaca · 15/05/2023 19:00

Pissed it down for a full fortnight when we went to Majorca in October. Never again!!

NotLovingWFH · 15/05/2023 19:43

We’ve done Majorca in the October half term a few years ago. Was early-mid twenties every day but you needed a jumper in the evenings and wetsuits for the pool. Absolutely fine though and not a drop of rain. It’s the end of the season though so bear in mind that some restaurants etc may have closed already.

Hellohah · 15/05/2023 19:47

We've been a few times (pre covid) in the October half term and it's always been warm enough for us.
Do need a jumper/jacket in the evenings though

reluctantbrit · 15/05/2023 20:04

My colleague has a flat in Majorca and he said his last visit per year is normally mid - end of September as October gets too unreliable, it's also statistically the wettest month I think.

It does depend what you want though. T-shirt and shorts and sun by the pool during the day is less guaranteed, out and about without a coat - shouldn't be a problem.

EwwSprouts · 15/05/2023 20:25

Cyprus is warm.

Surely2023IsTheYearForMyRainbowBaby · 15/05/2023 20:42

We went for 12 nights at the beginning of oct last year. We had 1 day of heavy rain and thunderstorms, a heavy storm during one of the nights. A few afternoons it was cloudy but still warm and the rest of the time it was clear blue skies and red hot
