Does anyone know what happens when a partner moves in ESA/UC?

I'm currently on ESA. Support group.

My partner is planning on moving in soon. He is also on ESA support group.

Does anyone know what happens when he move in? Do we have a joint ESA claim or will we move onto UC?

Will they stop my money completly? I don't have any savings so am scared.

Thankyou.

I have a few hundred and so does he but obviously that won't last long if both our money is frozen?

Do they freeze CTC and CB?

It will be a change in circumstances likely to trigger a move to UC

Use the calculator on Turn2Us as a couple to see what your household income will be once they move in

If you do move to UC there’s a transition period to cover the change, you won’t receive no income at all

I think you can also apply for an advance as part of an initial UC claim, so if you think that any delay will need you short of money, perhaps ask for a £200 or whatever as an advance when to notify the change in circumstances. But I think that CB is completely separate to TC/UC so should continue as normal.

I don't know the significance of 'ESA support group' but be aware that if one of you starts working, UC entitlement will be reduced (common problem when a working partner moves in with a low income single parent, their income often means all income related benefits end and they're expected to support someone else's DC).

Is your ESA Conts based or income based?

Do either of you get any disability premiums on top?

Both income based with no disability elements because we've always both been too nervous to apply (the ESA was stressful enough) so just get by on that

Have a look at the Citizens Advice pages about PIP - if you think the criteria apply to you and/or your partner you should contact them to help
you apply. This is because PIP is not means tested so can act as a steady and predictable element of your income
