Good present for DS (16) to give his new girlfriend

DS has his first girlfriend (aah!), they’re very sweet and taking things v slow, not least as GCSEs start next week!

It’s her 16th birthday soon and he does not know what to get her. We know no other teenage girls (male heavy extended family) so I thought I’d ask MN! I was thinking a small bracelet but he thinks that might be too ‘coupley’ as they are so new together. Is jewellery too much? Any other suggestions? Help please!

^I have no idea what her interests are and I’m not really sure DS does either!*

I think he really needs to show some interest and find out then.

And you being so involved is a bit weird. 😬

I’d leave him to it OP - it’s up to him to think about how much he knows her. You could be telling him how much she would love a cuddly toy when the opposite could be true! (My first proper bf gave me a Disney cuddly toy when I was 16. It was so far removed from what I liked that it gave me the instant ick and I finished with him a few days later - until that point we had been head over heels!)

Visit to cinema or bowling with food ?

Or something to wear

Does she have any hobbies ?

Jewellery at 16, no

Haha my dd started dating a couple of months prior to Christmas. He bought her a Pandora bracelet with a charm. He then gave her another charm for Valentine's Day and another for her 16th.

What about a Joma bracelet for sweet 16? Not too couply but memorable and nice?

Probably frightfully uncool

That's a pretty serious present!
I gave something similar to my daughter for her 15th, but would have been concerned about the cost if a BF had done that.

I'm really surprised that people saying that 16-year-olds would like a soft toy from their boyfriend.

I agree, I would have found that way too childish and would have loved a bracelet.

BurbageBrook · 14/05/2023 21:05

16 is not 12! I wouldn't have been impressed with a soft toy at that age! A bracelet or other jewellery doesn't have to be expensive but it's nice to get something like that as it's more sentimental. When I was that age a boyfriend got us tickets for an under 18s gig as we both liked indie music which was a lovely present.

Perfume is a good idea too but stationery is too boring as a gift from a boyfriend.

DS had a girlfriend at 15 and he bought her a succulent in a nice pot, apparently she collected them.

My nieces (a bit older) like necklaces with words (star signs) or initials on them. I think Etsy is good for this

Gymnopedie · 14/05/2023 21:49

OP how about something like this? It's a bracelet but not silver or shiny, it's casual. Plus a small bunch of flowers?

2023usernameNew · 14/05/2023 21:52

My daughter and her friends are all obsessed with sol de Janeiro perfumes.

ChippyPrincess · 15/05/2023 08:44

My daughter was bought a silver name necklace for her 16th birthday - which she loved (the boyfriend not so much!). She still wears the necklace a few years on, long after the boy was forgotten.

BurbageBrook · 16/05/2023 16:32

No offence to @Gymnopedie but if I was 16 I'd politely thank the giver but I would think it looked like an 11 year old's bracelet. This is the tricky thing with gift giving -- it's so personal.

I would get a revision hamper. Big bag of sweets, hot chocolate, notebook, a bottle of bubble bath etc

Love this idea. Brilliant
