Has anyone ever just upped sticks and moved away?

I've been thinking about this a lot lately. I am single with a DS who is 15, about to finish Year 10. He plans to go to university.

I've lived in the same town my entire life and I'm bored of it. I have friends but we're at different life stages now. I was 18 when I had DS, so my whole adult life so far has been dedicated to parenting. My friends are just starting to settle down and have children, whereas I'm at the opposite end now. As DS gets older, I kind of feel like I want to do something for myself. I don't have much family, I have my mum and a brother but we're not hugely close. NC with my dad and all of his family.

Obviously I wouldn't do it until DS goes off to uni and I certainly won't be kicking him out, I'll make sure there's a bedroom for him wherever I go.

Has anyone done this? I don't know if it's a crazy idea and the grass isn't greener.

I have! Although I didn't have DC at the time but I was fed up and just accepted a job in a totally different part of the country (200 miles away) and moved to the area I'm living now. I don't regret it at all, I'd have hated to always stay in the same town and never try living somewhere different.

It’s a perfectly normal thing to do.

The only problem I can see is that presumably your DS will stay with you in the University holidays, so tell him where you intend to go so he can choose his Uni accordingly, plus he won’t have anywhere to stay when he wants to see his old school friends in the Uni holidays.

Yes, I'd only move somewhere with good transport links anyway as I don't drive, and I'd wait to see what uni he goes to first. I think if he wanted to go and see friends my mum would be ok for him to stay with her, but obviously I would discuss that with her first.

Sounds great, thanks for sharing! I'm glad it worked out well for you.
