Do you keep stuff from your school days?

I'm just curious really. I still have a few exercise books from the school I was the school I was that before aged 10. I have thrown some away over the years but I can't quite bring myself to get rid of all of them especially the creative writing ones.

I still have my secondary school reports, record of achievement, and a number of project books.

My mum used to keep it all but she gave it to me years ago.

I actually hated school but still hold onto it.

I have many of my uni essays and projects too but they are interesting to look at.

Anyone else?

My husband has kept all that stuff and more. I sometimes cheer myself up by fantasising about throwing it in a skip. We have a lot of clutter.

heartbroken22 · 13/05/2023 18:21

No I don't see the point tbh. Too much clutter. I've kept my own kids stuff though for now. They can decide when they're older if they want to keep or get rid.

They are all in the bin along with the same stuff from my DD's schooldays apart from a few select bits. Decluttering feels so great. I'm not really sentimental about that sort of stuff.

mrsmacmc · 13/05/2023 18:26

I've got my tie, yearbook and blazer pocket. Everything else has gone now but for years had a box of reports / projects etc up the loft. Needed the space so they went in the declutter and tidy up

Spottycarousel · 13/05/2023 18:27

The consensus seems to be against keeping that sort of thing then. I have thrown a lot away over the years and have just done a bit more recently. For Mr it's a gradual letting go. I've only just torn up the wedding photo to my abusive ex 20 years ago!

I have my school tie, leavers book which we all signed took photos etc and a piece of coursework I was very proud of. Mum still has all the vhs of my school nativities and think a few other bits and bobs

Bathroomlove · 13/05/2023 18:27

Not only kept, but shipped overseas ....& back. I'm sentimental.

Oh yes....leavers books! I have them from school and six form college. Will keep those.

I got my school reports from my mums loft after she died.

I still have my notes and text books from when I did my nurse training. I’ve been qualified 30 years. We’re looking to move house this year and have started decluttering but no way can I bring myself to get rid of them!

I always have been too. That's why it's hard to let go.

My mum has a lot of this stuff in her loft. I'll skip it when it becomes my problem.

I can understand that. I'm holding onto my uni essays.

I have my school reports from primary and secondary and a few pieces of work that I particularly like. I still enjoy looking through them every now and again and my daughter has recently asked to have a look. They live in a plastic crate in the loft, don’t take up a huge amount of room, so I’m happy to keep hold.

YukoandHiro · 13/05/2023 18:31

I got rid of it all in a recent house move. I just realised I was hoarding it for no good reason and it would just be junk my DDs had to clear out when I died.

joelmillersbackpack · 13/05/2023 18:32

My mum kept all my reports and I actually found them quite sad to read through as I didn’t enjoy school. I threw them away apart from one which was really lovely.

theblackradiator · 13/05/2023 18:40

No, kept absolutely nothing of mine. my mum wasn't the sentimental kind so she just binned everything of mine. I have lots of my own dcs stuff though too much actually but I can't bring myself to bin it.

MrsAvocet · 13/05/2023 18:44

I haven't, no. But DH had boxes and boxes of old exercise books etc. He might think he still has actually, but I chucked them all out when we moved house 23 years ago. Since he hasn't noticed they've gone, I'm guessing the O level French books from 1980 are probably not essential to his well being. 😉

postwarbulge · 13/05/2023 19:09

The only part of my school uniform that would fit me now would be the tie!

Riapia · 13/05/2023 19:17

My NDN proudly showed me her DD’s brownie uniform and blanket.
NDN was 68 at the time, her DD 43. Too much emotion for her to part with it.
I’m certain that it was the dust in the room that got in my eye.

Do you still have it??

I still have my old gym school bag and school towel with my name embroidered on. No uniform however. We had about the most disgusting shade of uniform imaginable.

Toddlerteaplease · 13/05/2023 19:25

Still got my blazer and tie. Have a few things. My mum kept some primary school stuff.

postwarbulge · 13/05/2023 19:48

At the Girls' Simon Langton, we had awful black blazers with silver-coloured piping. We looked like the Waffen SS

lunar1 · 13/05/2023 20:18

My parents didn't keep a single thing from my childhood. For my sons, I've done them a large scrapbook of bits of work, drawings, reports etc from every year.

I want to give them keepsakes but not a suitcase full of stuff to lug around for life!

grafittiartist · 13/05/2023 20:26

I keep everything!
Love looking through it all too.
