Hairdressers - Dry Cut?!?!

Is this a thing now?

Went to the hairdressers this morning for a cut and colour (first time I've tried this salon). She coloured my hair, washed it, dried it, and THEN cut it. This is the second hairdresser that's done it this way and it never gives good results. The cut is always uneven!

It used to always be - wash, cut, then blow dry. Is everyone cutting hair dry these days?

My hairdresser dry cuts it first then washes it. I’m curly though and she cuts only curly hair, so that’s probably why.

No one near me is cutting hair dry (other than max 1in trim at supercuts) and it drives me nuts because I don’t want my hair washed at the salon!
I don’t think it being dry is the reason for it being uneven though - surely bits cut wet drying with different amounts of wave would be more likely to result in an uneven cut? Maybe they’re just not very good.

I was surprised when one hairdresser did this some years ago. But- he was the best hairdresser I’ve ever had and made it really easy for me to style afterwards.

I was gutted when he left and went travelling and it’s taken me years to find someone remotely approaching his skill. He’s back now and a very successful salon co owner, with his wife. They win plenty of awards and he does stuff on TV too. They’re so successful, they’ve closed their books to new clients. If they were a bit closer, I’d love to go back to him.

My hairdresser dry cuts, washes, dries and then touches up cut. I have curly hair (which I style straight) and dry cutting gets the best result.

No, always a wet cut!

MermaidEyes · 13/05/2023 15:05

I've always had long hair and every hairdresser I've been to has dry cut it!

elm26 · 13/05/2023 15:17

Mine does dye/foils/roots or whatever I'm having, wash, cut, blow dry roughly and neaten up the cut/uses thinning scissors to get rid of some of the weight then finishes with a smooth/bouncy/curly blow dry depending on what I'm after.

Never had anyone cut my hair dry but been with this hairdresser for 9 years now and she's certainly never done it.

I don't have a regular hairdresser as I have long, curly, dark hair so don't get it done very often but I've always had a wet cut prior to these 2 salons.

Apparently for curly hair it's the best way to judge the final outcome. I've always had wet cuts but then my hair is totally straight.

I have curly hair and always dry cut
He dry cuts it, washes, styles and diffuses it then cuts again if needed

HakunaMatatty · 13/05/2023 16:20

I understand cutting it dry if you wear your hair curly all the time (I do 90% of the time) but she dried it straight before cutting it.

I would say your hairdresser does not understand how to cut curly hair. I have curly hair but the 'springiness' of each curl varies, which is why it needs to be cut dry in order to judge where the curl will end up 😁
Straightening it, then cutting it dry, no wonder your hair is all over the place. Don't go there again is my advice and find a salon that specialises in curly hair. It doesn't behave the same as other hair types!

My sister is my hairdresser and has always dry cut my hair. It goes very elastic when wet which drives her mad so dry cut it is. I can't recall it ever being uneven.
