Where can I buy a business?

Is there a website.....?

Budget £50 000 to £100 000.

I've no real business experience. I've got a science PhD and work as a self employed science writer at the moment. I want to own a business that my kids (now young adults)can choose to work in if they want. They are onboard.

I know I'll get slated but just curious as to where you find businesses up for sale.

Not slated

More like concern!

Bit of a strange request...you want to buy a business but don't really know what...how strange!

BodenseeBoden · 13/05/2023 09:38

Any business up for sale at that price must be a failing one, so please don’t just buy any business, esp without any experience. I’d be shocked if there was an actual website.

i think your best bet would be a franchise, there are lots of kids sports clubs you could reach out to. And you’d get help with any business related issue

gymwars · 13/05/2023 09:38

Sounds like you've got a foolproof plan there

Infusionist · 13/05/2023 09:40

Have a look at franchises maybe?

booktokbear · 13/05/2023 10:12
Confused

Odd to want to "buy a business" when you have no experience or even an interest in a particular field!

I can't see how you'd even be accepted for a franchise - why would a brand risk their reputation with someone who hasn't a clue?

You could set yourself up as a cleaner perhaps - i assume that is something you have experience of? and then teenage children could work in your cleaning company?

The process is usually to set up your own business doing something you choose to do

If you wanted to buy a business that someone else had built up and was selling, there are brokers you can contact which you can Google, or you could contact local accountants if they have any businesses on their books who are looking to sell. But I would think that isn't common practice

Comfortingpigeon · 13/05/2023 10:27

Not odd, lots of people do this and there are dedicated websites, just google uk businesses for sale.

Are you hoping to buy a business then just sit back and do nothing while it continues making money? Or are you going to run it?

If you don't know what you're doing you'll need to pay for advice or your business will fail.

Houseupdate · 13/05/2023 10:39

That’s a very low amount to pay for a business which you’re expecting to have enough profit to employ 2 people and have enough money to reinvest in the business.
