Do these look like the kind of nails that people with psa can get ?? This happened randomly, I thought it was from gels but it only happened to my toe nails, it took a year but one of them is mostly better apart from it's thickened at the end
I'm asking as had a whole host of issues with joints since birth of my second child, psoriasis in my family so wondering if this is finally an answer
Thanks

Yes they do

lurchermummy · 12/05/2023 20:50

Sorry posted too soon, yes if you have joint pain it's definitely worth asking for a referral to a rheumatologist. PsA does not show up on blood tests, so don't be fobbed off by them.

minginnails · 12/05/2023 20:55

Thank you. I thought it was fungal but I'm not convinced now putting everything together.

Are the cracks like thickening do you think?
I have recently seen a rheumatologist and he has ordered several different bloods tests and scans, but all the blood tests the gp did came back normal so I'm not confident these will show anything different

I'm not sure there's anything definitive but scans will show if the joint issues are inflammatory or mechanical / if mechanical it's wear and tear not PsA. Nails on their own don't tell the full story - do you havff egg psoriasis anywhere? Scalp? Eyebrows?

minginnails · 12/05/2023 22:05

@lurchermummy sorry what do you mean by mechanical?

No I don't (I have hand eczema according to the gp, red scaly itchy skin that cracks and bleeds, comes up in flares)
My nan had rheumatism and psoriasis and my sister is covered head to toe in it

Does anyone else think these nails look likely to be PsA related ?

OP posts:
BeethovenNinth · 13/05/2023 06:29

Yes I do. My family member has this in big toes only and has arthritis

it was missed by GPs over and over. Push for rheumatology

minginnails · 13/05/2023 07:57

@BeethovenNinth thank you for replying ! I just need to hear from people who can say yes that isn't fungal it looks PsA related as it happened out of nowhere and the more I read into PsA the more it makes sense.

I have already seen the rheumatologist but completely forgot to mention my toenails which is annoying

That happens to mine if I wear ANY nail polish. Only on my toes. But as far as I am aware it's a reaction to polish as I 'only' have osteoarthritis in my hips and back... my bloods tests were normal.

RandomMess · 13/05/2023 08:09

I feel like screaming as even on here people aren't reading. PsA does not show on ANY blood test.

I need to remember to quote this when I hear back off the rheumatologist

Also you don't need to have any psoriasis lesions on your skin either <<argh>>

lurchermummy · 13/05/2023 12:10

@RandomMess yes!!!!

Well actually that isn't true as it does show for me (5 years diagnosed with PsA and CRP is always raised if I've had a blood test when flaring. Have blood tests 12 weekly now but I've had them weekly / fortnightly etc when flaring or starting new medications)

However you are correct that for a huge majority of people autoimmune arthritis will be seronegative, but not all.

Crunchymum · 13/05/2023 12:19

I was told by my rheumatologist that I'm lucky it shows in my blood tests. I guess it just means it is easier to tell when I'm flaring / medication isn't working etc.

Push your GP for a referral to rheumatology @minginnails

Crunchymum · 13/05/2023 12:51

Sorry I see you are already under a rheumatologist. Do you have a folllow up appointment booked to discuss the blood tests/ scans?

No, I was told after the X-ray and bloods that the doctor would either call me or send a letter out with results, heard nothing yet (so that's got me thinking nothing significant was showing on the scan?) bloods have never shown anything, apart from once my inflammatory markers was at 9 which I know is barely raised

Also the other X-rays and ultrasounds he said he would get hooked so I'm guessing I will receive a letter for them - and then hopefully a follow up would come after them

Been trying to putt these up for ages ! This was my hands in March, I think you can see the swelling, granted it isn't much compared to some but it's definitely there
