Can a hernia repair itself?

I had my youngest by EMCS. After the delivery, the consultant told me that when she opened me up, I had a hernia, and was I aware? No, I was not aware. I’ve never had a hernia before, and didn’t know anything about them. DS was a big baby, if that makes any difference. She said that I should follow up at my 8 week post delivery appointment with the GP.

Apart from recovering in the normal way from the EMCS (it was my second EMCS), I didn’t notice anything odd, but I did mention it the GP at my post natal appointment explaining that I’d been told to. She examined me and said she ‘can’t see signs of hernia’. I was massively bloated at the time and really, really embarrassed about how big my tummy still was, so I didn’t press it by saying something like ‘is that because there isn’t a hernia anymore or can you just not tell because of my swollen stomach’ but she did say that I should go back in three months if I was having problems. I wasn’t having any problems at any stage, before or after the birth, so I never followed it up.

I’m now wondering whether I should have followed it up! Or whether sometimes hernias just heal themselves. It is really niggling away at me.

Any views please?

What sort of hernia? If it was incisional they may have fixed the problem. If it wasn't then they (the surgeon) should tell you what sort they thought it was so that your GP at least knows where to look.

I have no idea - I don’t remember her saying anything more than ‘you have a hernia, were you aware?’. To be honest, I didn’t know that there were different types.
