Good toys/ideas for car journey with baby

Doing a loooong multi stage journey by car with my 11 month old. We’ve planned for all of the stops and breaks but just thinking how I’m going to keep her occupied in the car. Usually she likes the noise of the car and just snoozes, or is happy to babble- but I need an arsenal of distractions.

Any tips? Google just brings up the soft dangly toys for younger babies.

Just make sure any toys you give her are car safe. If throwing it hard at her face would cause injury then it's not safe for her to have in the event of a crash. So light and soft toys only.

currently tidying the playroom thinking - ‘will this hurt?’

Can one of you sit in the back with her? We do this for long car journeys so I can pass her toys, talk to her, ect. Really uncomfortable but so much better than the screaming

I’m definitely going to be sat in the back with her for this reason.

just want some ideas for toys/other fun objects!

we've just done a long car journey (600 miles each way) and our youngest is 18mo although we did it at 1yo too.

We use an axkid premium seat protector for the ipad holder (crash tested) and put the tv/downloads on when nothing else is working!

Also:

  • an old purse with some cards in
  • phone case
  • a pack of cards
  • LCD drawing tablet
  • a stack of 5 or so duplo blocks
  • a couple of duplo windows/doors
  • sensory tubes
  • a blanket (to hide under etc!)
  • toilet roll tube

As pp said ideally toys would be light and/or soft. I sit in the back middle too (sooo uncomfortable!)

Emergency melty puffs.

I'm sure there are loads of good suggestions but I have forgotten everything except these. Total lifesaver for DS3 around this age as he absolutely hated long car journeys and wanted holding, which obviously wasn't an option!

Remote control
Finger puppets
Objects with interesting textures - bath loofah, crinkly foil blanket
Books especially lift the flap books or one with buttons to press
Small tub of clothes pegs
Lots of snacks that take a while to eat like raisins
Photo album of familiar people

Water bottle
Bunch of keys

A soft photo album. Add photos of child, family, tractors, horses, favourite teddy, you name it. Some familiar stuff and some stuff to stretch the mind. Adding and removing photos kept dc happy on journeys for years.

Park away from the toilets. A properly brought up child is never physically isolated like they are in a car seat so when you stop, they just want to cling. Park well away from the toilets and carry from car to toilet. Put down while you wee, change nappy etc. Child may then be happy to walk back to car. At least, that’s the routine we eventually worked out.
