I always think of a job description as a description of the ideal person once they are already working there. Not a description of you as an applicant.

As someone new to the role, that is what you are aiming to learn/ achieve during the role - not necessarily what you will start out with.

If you meet more than 50% of the criteria I'd say it's worth applying.

Sounds like it fits your interests as well as your experience. Definitely apply. Can you read some journals or papers or something to get some of the knowledge you're lacking?

Think like a bloke:

Apply if you think you can do it well & say why in the cover letter.

What's the worst that can happen? Apply for it!

Research like mad on the gaps in your experience so that you can talk credibly during the interview. Speak to people who are doing similar roles. This will also help you to find out if taking yourself in that direction is the right fit.

You can raise all this during the interview to demonstrate your interest in the role, your sheer initiative and drive and why you think you will thrive in it. Even if there are gaps, the interviewers can see how you will easily bridge it if given the chance. Once you get to a certain seniority, it really is about the person because the skills can be picked up.

Go for it!

Go for it op!

Think like a bloke! Apply for it. What have you got to lose?

Justsadallthetime · 10/05/2023 23:32

Yes, absolutely go for it.

SuperABunDance · 11/05/2023 08:15

Oh, I like that @ZoraMipha I'll have to try and remember that. I've applied. It's only short term to cover a a maternity leave, so hopefully not too many people are interested!

DH always used to say that no one will meet all the criteria so if you fancy a job and think you can do it, go for it . Good luck

I remember reading once that it’s not your job to decide if you’re good enough to do the job, it’s the recruiters.

The message being that women tend to rule themselves out whereas men are less likely to. Go for it and see what happens.

Good luck.
