Looks like one to me

No eaty parts so I'd say no. Mosquitoes are more feathery and you can see the proboscis.

You can tell by the drifty way they fly whereas other similar insects fly more directly.

Squash it anyway to be sure though.

I think it is.

I don’t think so. No proboscis (bity part) and looks fairly flat, mosquito’s sit with an arch/humpback. The wings don’t look right either, though I can’t say why.

Gnat. Not a mosquito. Same family (ish), but non-bitey.

Probably Sylvicola sp., feeds on decaying matter... so compost heap or garbage disposal outlet???

I don’t think so, unless it’s a species that doesn’t look like the typical ones I see in the UK. It’s hard to tell from one blurry photo. Mozzies have a characteristic way of standing, with their head down and front legs kind of bent downward. Their antennae are hairy (I don’t know if this is true for all). I can’t see its proboscis. The wings of this one look spotted and I don’t think mozzy wings are spotted.
How big is/was it?
