Greek Style Yoghurt - how long after opening?

We don't usually buy Greek yoghurt but ended up with some as a substitution on Sunday, opened the same day, how long should it be ok? I can't seem to see it anywhere on the tub but maybe my new glasses are to blame there Grin

Google suggests up to two weeks! Which feels a lot longer than I would have guessed...

Ages. It will be fine until you can see blue bits, which is always several weeks.

Indiaplain · 09/05/2023 16:38

5 days? I'm fairly relaxed with yoghurt as you can easily tell if it's gone bad.

MissDollyMix · 09/05/2023 16:41

Ok, we get through an enormous amount of GSY in our house so I feel qualified to answer! It gets eaten fairly quickly here but I would comfortably leave it open for up to a week (taking a bit out every morning). Done this hundreds of times and it's never made anyone ill or tasted bad (obviously assuming you all have healthy functioning immune systems and a nice cold fridge)

My limit is at least three weeks, and it’s still fine. I get a 500ml pot of Greek yogurt as I like to stir some into my home made soups after reheating. I live alone, so it takes over 3 weeks to get through the pot.

JE17 · 09/05/2023 16:49

I think I've inadvertently eaten some that had been open for 3 weeks. Passed the nose test and tasted fine.

TheApplianceofScience · 09/05/2023 16:50

At least three weeks.

andymary · 09/05/2023 16:53

It can vary quite a bit depending on the temperature of your fridge.
But in reality, it could last a good few weeks. Just do a sniff test every week, if it smells ok then it probably is. Yoghurt is fermented milk anyway.

Just know that yoghurt can form a watery liquid at the top of the pot the longer it's been left opened. This is just the whey separating, and is perfectly normal. It can just be mixed back in, and doesn't suggest that the yoghurt has gone bad.

SomethingNastyInTheGenePool · 09/05/2023 16:56

Ages. As long as you don’t contaminate it with other food, it lasts well beyond its use-by date. Like, weeks.

FinallyHere · 09/05/2023 16:57

Anecdotally, Genghis Khan fed his warriors yoghurt because it instilled bravery in his warriors. As they overran China, India and Europe as far as the Caspian Sea...

Ask yourself whether he gave any thought to sell by dates or even refrigeration.

Yoghurt is fine unless the lid has blown. If it's already open, I'd scrape any blue mould off it and eat the rest

It's all magnificent for feeding the important bugs that live in your stomach.

everycowandagain · 09/05/2023 16:58

When it goes blue and furry!!

SpaghettiSquash · 09/05/2023 16:59

Several weeks. I only bin it if it's gone fizzy!

BearSoFair · 09/05/2023 17:03

Looks like we'll definitely get through it then! Thanks all

You could add more milk when it gets low and just keep going surely?

ReviewingTheSituation · 09/05/2023 17:08

Another vote for weeks! It lasts for ages as long as you use a clean spoon to get it out (so it doesn't get contaminated).

peerie · 09/05/2023 17:28

I agree with 3 weeks and a clean spoon also try to keep the pot above the yog level as clean as you can as that's where the blue fur starts.

elevenplusdilemma · 09/05/2023 17:31

Ages. At least 10 days (so long as it's still in date) and maybe a bit longer. It will separate so just give it a stir before serving.

If it smells funny, tastes sour or has fluff growing then maybe give it a miss but otherwise, enjoy!

dontgobaconmyheart · 09/05/2023 17:36

I find it lasts pretty well. I'll keep it open for a week (the packet usually says anything between 3 and 5 days depending on the brand) but it's always completely fine. When I open it I tend to portion it up in little glass pots to keep it fresh since the bloomin' things never come with a lid anymore these days.

LudicrouslyCapaciousBag · 09/05/2023 17:37

Yes, you’re taking weeks rather than days. Full-fat keeps better than reduced-fat IME.

AnnaMagnani · 09/05/2023 17:44

Until it has blue mould on it. At least 4 weeks if not more.

Bonbon21 · 09/05/2023 17:47

And with that last spoonful, you can rinse out the pot with some milk and make fab pancakes or scones...

Capitulatingpanda · 09/05/2023 17:49

Until mould appears or smell is bad.
