Going to Paris, take lots of cash?

I will be going to Paris in a couple of weeks. Does anyone know if there is a cash-only or no-cash culture there.

Last year I went to London (from Canada) and found I hardly used any of the cash I had brought. During previous trips, (pre-Covid) I had used cash a lot.

A bit of cash for cafés, but it's mostly card payments. We used cash more in Rome.

MetaDaughter · 09/05/2023 12:46

Was in France recently - honestly didn’t touch cash during the weeks I was there.

And you’d go hungry in London now if you tried to pay cash in cafes or restaurants …

I used cash

I never use cash anywhere now, you'll be fine with a card. I do try to use one that doesn't charge me for currency transactions though

greyhairnomore · 09/05/2023 12:52

I took cash for tips and taxis. Not all taxis take cards (if you're using taxis).

Kablea · 09/05/2023 12:52

I go regularly and never take cash.

gogohmm · 09/05/2023 13:04

Haven't taken cash on holiday for years

Beezknees · 09/05/2023 13:09

All major cities will have card facilities. You only really need cash nowadays for more remote destinations.

maslinpan · 09/05/2023 14:32

Revolut card is very easy to use when travelling.

LlynTegid · 09/05/2023 14:33

Went with €100, paid almost everything by card, cash only for things such as donating money in churches, and a couple of things so I had change for these.

howaboutchocolate · 09/05/2023 14:35

No you don't really need cash. Last time I went to Paris I took 10 euros in cash I found in an old bag, and came back with change.

Chchchchangingg · 09/05/2023 14:38

Didn't touch cash once when I was there last month.

Gymmum82 · 09/05/2023 14:40

Went 2 months ago. Didn’t use cash once

I never use cash in paris, I keep a few coins and small notes- under 20 euro though for things like buskers, some vending machines etc. You'd need it more in rural France but you won't need much if any in Paris. maybe do 50 euro cash.

Janek · 09/05/2023 14:58

We needed cash for the left luggage at gare de l'est. I didn't have any, so that was quite inconvenient!

greenacrylicpaint · 09/05/2023 15:03

it's very mixed.
big shops accept both cash & card but some smaller shops and cafes accept either or.

you will definitely need coins for public toilets.

Sunscummailfail · 09/05/2023 15:06

Cards only, minimum cash.

Andylion · 09/05/2023 17:23

Thanks for the replies, everyone. It looks like a small amount of cash is fine.

Bakeries often have a €10 card limit, which is quite a lot of croissant!
