Ebay: Who is being unreasonable?

So I bought a large household item on ebay (a big hoover). Item was pick up only, that’s fine.

Purchased item. Got a message from the seller saying that pick up is ONLY possible between 11-1 on a Wednesday and Thursday.

I work full time and don’t drive, so would have to get public transit there and a taxi back with it.

Seller thinks I’m rude and unreasonable for politely expressing my displeasure with the pick up times. Can I cancel now?

I think it’s unreasonable to expect people to pick up in the middle of the work day and offer no flexibility.

Just cancel the transaction. The seller is unreasonable for not mentioning the ridiculously narrow collection times in their listing. If I've been accused of rudeness by a seller, I wouldn't waste further time trying to engage with them

lljkk · 08/05/2023 22:17

Tell the seller you'd like to cancel.
You hold all the cards here because seller can't neg you, they want to keep you sweet so you don't neg them.

SilentHedges · 08/05/2023 22:22

Agree, cancel. 11-1, I.e. a 3 hour slot on 2 mid week days is unreasonable. Most people work for a start and that would mean booking time off to collect. It's not how life works.

I'm assuming they didn't mention this timeframe in their ad. I'd tell them you'll be cancelling before you actually do it, in case they suddenly find they can magically extend the pick up times. Any more messing about or lack of flexibility and I'd cancel straight away.

forknhell · 08/05/2023 22:22

I’ve unfortunately already paid though!

You'll get a refund via PayPal. The seller is totally unreasonable

LightlySearedontheRealityGrill · 08/05/2023 22:23

Doesnt matter, just message to say the timeframes are unrealistic and therefore you need to cancel. If they dont refund you, escalate it to ebay (who will refund you), and leave them a bad review.

drpet49 · 08/05/2023 22:23

Seller should have stated this in the listing. Completely unreasonable. Raise a case with eBay and get a refund.

forknhell · 08/05/2023 22:38

Seller did not state the pick up times. Honestly, it’s not like I’m getting the hoover for free either. I’m paying them hundreds of pounds!

Just message back and say you can't make those times, then contact eBay they will sort a refund. I sell on eBay a lot with collection items, the seller is being ridiculous.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 08/05/2023 23:19

On a side note, as well as being very unreasonable with the pickup times, the seller is being really foolish in accepting PayPal for a collect-in-person item.

It's the easiest thing in the world for the buyer to collect, then claim that they haven't received the item; the seller then has to prove they posted the item, which of course they can't, as they didn't, then the buyer gets refunded and the seller loses both the item and the money.

forknhell · 09/05/2023 07:01

I got another message back, where I asked if I could pick it up at 13:00 on the dot during my lunch break (which would be a huge push).

I was told no because she leaves at 13:00 exactly from the premises and won’t be put under unreasonable pressure! So it would have to be 12:30 Wtf?

Ask eBay for a refund. Stop talking to the seller.

This isn't the case anymore. You get a code you give the seller when you collect. That scam ship has sailed.

WeAreTheHeroes · 09/05/2023 07:06

I will hazard a guess the seller is unhappy with the price and is pratting about in the hope you give up instead of just cancelling the sale themselves.

Allschoolsareartschools · 09/05/2023 07:06

Absolutely ridiculous. You'll get a full refund with PayPal. Stop communicating with this batshit seller & start a case. Hundreds of pounds for a second hand hoover sounds a lot, you can buy really good reconditioned ones on ebay for much less.

friskybivalves · 09/05/2023 07:22

Unless it's a gold-plated Miele with full service history that you got for a song, you're better off cancelling. (Even a few hundred for their top of the range ones can be a good deal). So I agree with a PP - is the seller deliberately trying to sabotage your mega bargain, hoping you'll give up in frustration?

Ah, thanks, WeAreTheHeroes - glad to hear they've clamped down on that one now.
