Does this really need A&E? (Burn - photo warning)

panicattackhell · 08/05/2023 20:15

Burnt myself about an hour-90 mins ago.

Lent back against my bedroom heater, and caught my back on it, just above my hip.

It’s no bigger than my hand span - about 5-6cm diameter I think - but blistered, weepy and still pretty hot to touch.

NHS24 are saying to get it seen at A&E in case it needs dressed/treatment but I’m trying to avoid nipping over there if I can as doubtless be stuck for a very long wait.

Can I avoid A&E or should I take myself over?

This does not need A&E.

just go to the GP nurse or minor injuries tomorrow. It'll probably be quicker than sitting in A&E all night anyway. Or go to a pharmacy and get a dressing - jelonet is a good choice for burns

Agapornis · 08/05/2023 21:36

I wouldn't go to A&E for that, but I would do some first aid on myself:

You need to cool it with tepid-to-cool water ASAP. Ideally running water, but a bath could work too. Do this for at least 20 minutes. DON'T put on any ice!

If you have it, apply burns gel, available in most pharmacies, sometimes in individual sachets. Don't put on any creams or greasy stuff.

Then clingfilm it gently, and take some paracetamol/ibuprofen (a pill, not a cream). And finally, take yourself on a first aid course so you can learn to sort it yourself :)

Why ask 111 then ignore the advice and ask the netmums medics?

Wrong site.

PinkButtercups · 08/05/2023 21:40

I probably wouldn't but I'm not a medic.
I'd usually run it straight under cold water and see how it goes.

Looks sore though so hope you feel better soon.

Wtf 🤬 don't do this!

NHS states that if the burn blisters, you need medical attention.

Not the point I know, but where are you that needs a heater that hot currently?!

Looks sore, I’m not one to rush off to hospital or the GP but I’d be tempted to get that looked at.

Which bit of the NHS states that? Because it's not on their treatment for burns page: https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/burns-and-scalds/treatment/

OP, the NHS advice in this link will work for you.

michealsmum1998 · 08/05/2023 21:45

Yes mine looked like that after an hour. Looked a lot worse after 2 days

BooksAndHooks · 08/05/2023 21:45

I had a scald a bit bigger than that in March. It didn’t meet the NHS website guidelines for treatment. I covered it and got burn cooling dressings from chemist the next day. Then kept it covered for a few weeks. It was very weepy for about 10 days but no sign of infection. It has healed fine now.

Under the blister heading.

Burns and scalds - Recovery

How long it takes to recover from a burn or scald depends on how serious it is and how it is treated.

In fact it’s the second page of the link you posted @Agapornis

Wtf

LittleMrsPerfect · 08/05/2023 21:56

Is this a joke?
Of course you don't need A & E because it is NOT a chemical or electrical burn, it os NOT large or deep, No white or charred skin and NOT in a sensitive area. What makes you think it needs medically treatment?

DiscoBeat · 08/05/2023 21:59

If you've been advised to go I would reluctantly, but I might actually seek advice at a pharmacy first as they will actually see it rather than have a description over the phone.

DiscoBeat · 08/05/2023 22:00

What makes you think it needs medically treatment?
Well the OP said she was advised to.

TheGirlWhoLived · 08/05/2023 22:03

Why wouldn’t you ice it? I’ve not had a severe burn but I’ve tried to cool down smaller ones. Like with ice wrapped in a tea towel to cool it?! Seems I was way wrong 😂

Arewehumanorarewecupboards · 08/05/2023 22:05

I would get seen rather than get advice from mumsnet. A photo doesn’t always show exactly how bad it is.

polkadotdalmation · 08/05/2023 22:07

I think it can be managed at home as it looks fairly superficial. Chemist for a burns dressing is ideal, or a Vaseline dressing. Cool as much as possible and clean it first.

SuperDuperJezebel · 08/05/2023 22:08

DO NOT PUT VASELINE ON IT!

HadalyEve · 08/05/2023 22:12

If you have a minor injuries unit, you could go there first thing in the morning as many A&Es you’d be waiting that long or longer if you went tonight.

Meadowfly · 08/05/2023 22:12

So many people recommending Vaseline / Vicks / sudocreme! Are you all trying to make the burn worse or just lacking first aid knowledge ? If you lack first aid knowledge stop giving advice!!! And do a first aid course!

Because ice will kill even more tissue.

This!!! And Do not ice it!!!!! The advice on here is worrying. No creams and no ice! Cover with non stick gauze.

Agapornis · 08/05/2023 22:16

Tulipvase · 08/05/2023 21:47

Ah I see - bit of conflict there too though, because blisters are also mentioned under 'Burns that don't need medical attention'. Further down it says 'expert opinion is divided over the management of blisters that are caused by burns' - indeed! Grin

There's no way I'd want medical attention every time I burn myself on the oven or the iron!

VaccineSticker · 08/05/2023 22:17

First aid trained here- use cool water for 20 min on the affected site then seek medical attention as you’ve been advised by 111.

panicattackhell · 08/05/2023 22:20

111 have just rung asking why I haven’t gone to A&E, and said if I don’t go they’ll call again. I’m sure it doesn’t need A&E. Did say I’d be happy to get it seen by nurse tomorrow but she said needs A&E for a dressing.
